: no flammin needed emissons question
deputydawg 09-28-2005, 08:34 AM I have a 85 w-150, 360. I have been to the emissions testing facility 5 times now, and this damb thing still will not pass the pressure test..... I have replaced all the lines from the charcol canister to the carb and to the smug pump. From the canister to the tank, from the tank to the carb. every line has been replaced. I replaced the rubber gasket on the fuel sending unit and i have replaced the roll over valve, including the rubber gasket with that. I replaced the filler neck groment. everything is brand new. My problem is that the emissions place is telling me that it will not hold a 1/2 a pound of pressure and that i can not pass untill the system does hold that pressure. What am i over looking? At $27.75 a pop i'm getting pretty mad!!!! :mad3: :mad3: :mad3: I am lost and need direction as to what else it could be!!!!
Pavemen 09-28-2005, 09:45 AM can you hookup an air line at 3-4 psi and test it yourself? just listen for the leak?
deputydawg 09-28-2005, 12:54 PM Well isn't this a pain it the arsh!!!! I am trying to get a new tank for this truck and nope can't do that eather!!!! There not even made any more. WTF!!!! :mad3: This is a freakin joke right???? I called the Dealership first and thay told me to go threw a parts store. cool I call the store and nope thay tell me Junk yard part only. Now I can call BS right!!!!????!!!! :shaking: I am gona have to fix the one i have and hope i never have this problem again i guess. Providing I can find and then fix the problem. Sucks to be me!!!
Elwenil 09-28-2005, 02:57 PM No offense, but it is a 20 year old truck. Parts are normally dropped out of the system after the demand has gone down for them and they have a certain age. You can get aftermarket tanks, but they are steel in a lot of cases, are extra capacity, and are expensive. The tank is polyethylene, so I would doubt it is a leak in the tank. I'd try and pressurize the system yourself and check for leaks. Most likely it is some small seal or gasket that isn't sealing properly. I'd check the obvious things like the gas cap, and maybe check the new parts you bought to make sure they are not leaking. Parts store stuff has been known to have quality issues. sorry you are having this much trouble. Makes me glad we don't have emissions testing here...
crashnzuk 09-28-2005, 06:49 PM The poly tanks can crack. I took one out of an 80 1/2 ton 2wd that was cracked. If it turns out to be the tank, a wrecking yard is your fate.
Travis..
k10caddy 09-30-2005, 04:47 AM up here we don't have to pressure check emissions systems. how exactly does the system get pressure checked? also, why does it need to hold pressure? iirc, most carbed apps just had a vent that was connected into a charcoal canister... allowing pressure to be released or filtered air to be drawn in to replace fuel, as it gets consumed.
additionally steel tanks don't distort -causing a leak- when the sending-unit lock ring is put on. I've heard of too many plastic tanks that do.
deputydawg 09-30-2005, 11:38 AM Well I have becaume victorious!!!!!!!!!!
I found my leak it was under the cross member that holds the back of the tank up. I put a butt load of JB WELD on it and will test it again today. I think thay pressurize the system to make sure were not dumping raw fuel into the atmosphere. it has something to do with ampmosphereic pressure. Hell I dont know for sure. its stupid so thay do it!!!!! finding other ways to get us carb people off the roads. but I will let you all know if it works this time. Thanks for all the help.
deputydawg 10-03-2005, 08:21 AM Anyone have a gas tank with the evaporative system on it I can use? This tank is still leaking. Just when you think you have the thing fixed! POOF!!!!! It gets shit on again. Still have a leak somewere. I am going to go get a cheap tank and put it in. I have to have the thing working soon this is getting crazy.
deputydawg 10-19-2005, 06:42 AM FINALLY !!!!!!!!!
I had to replace the tank and finaly on try #8 The freaking thing passed. What a releaf....... Now if I could just find the grinding noise coming from the rearend I'd be set. I pulled the pumpkin cover off and cleaned things up in there, nothing major going on in there. thats not the problem so now im gona pull the wheels and check out the brakes. make sure its not a hung up shoe. any way the emissions is done and over with........
THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!
BillCM 10-19-2005, 08:40 AM Congrats on the emissions fix man.
