can you figure out what I'm doing to my Jeep??? Remember that my Jeep has it's original tub, stamped out in 1953.

I just purchased one sheet of aluminum diamond-plate 4' x 16' x 1/8" had it cut into pieces, one seven feet long, one five feet long and that of course leaves a 4' x 4' square.
Also purchased was 4ea of aluminum 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 8' angle and 4ea 2" x 2" x .120" aluminum tubing.

I still need some 5200 and some stainless fasteners.

Old Jeep should have a good idea of what I'm doing;)

okay, here are pics of Old Jeep's Jeep (Thanks Chuck!) though similar I am planning on doing the fender wells in aluminum, as well as the firewall. And where as Old Jeep made his subfloor out of one inch steel box tubing, I am going to use two inch aluminum box tubing and bolt the tub sides to the floor.

Looks like you beat me to it. Funny how those pictures came up in a different thread a couple days ago.

Mines bolted in too. Couldn't weld the supports to the sides of the tub because the previous owner laid a thick coat of fiberglass all over the sides of the tub. Makes it impossible to weld near it without it flaming up.

Hooder- What's this setting you back? How bad was your floor prior to this project? My CJ2A is showing it's age in spots and, ever since Old Jeep sent me the picks of his, I have been seriously thinking about making the move now while the frame and body is off.....

4ea of aluminum 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 8' angle

$633.00 (includes sales tax of 8.4%?)

My floor is pretty bad, here this pic sorta shows the floors condition, it doesn't show the worst parts, but you can see that the hat channels are pretty much toast.
http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Photos/Tech/Pinto/McHughFloorSupports.JPG
now, if you look at that picture it pretty much illistrates what I plan on doing with the 2x2 box, have it double as a bodylift as and a sub-frame. My only holdback for the moment is that I'm installing a 22gal tank in the rear and I don't know how much I'll need to raise the floor. Hell, the tank itself is a little wider than the inside diameter of my frame. So I plan on cutting out the two rear crossmembers, spread the frame about a half-inch, and then weld in 2x4 box crossmembers that will hold the tank and make the frame even stronger than I've already made it:grinpimp:

Is that aluminum diamond plate? If so, that's a steal! Otherwise, steel diamond plate is going to be heavy.

Damn I wish that I would've known that aluminum prices are that cheap there:confused: BUT HOW/WHY??? Todd, are you sure that it was 1/8"x4'x8'??? that's fawkin cheap:eek:

sounds like 1rustyrig needs to get the ol' Cheif to hook 'im up with some shiney stuff;) It's not too heavy, but it is an odd size, but if you do it like Old Jeep did his floor you could cut it down to 4'x5' and duct tape the 3'x4' piece to it and ship it that way, it's smaller, and I bet it could even go fedex or ups;)

now this REALLY has me confused, here in the Pacific northwest, with all of our cheap hydro-electric power is where the MAKE aluminum, fawkin Reynolds is only a few miles away, why is it more expensive here than there??? are you sure that we are talking about the same gauge dp? When I say 1/8" I'm talking the main piece of metal, not measuring the diamonds.

Yes, 3/16 tread plate. Have you called a couple places? Loook up metals in the yellow pages - and make sure you don't call Metal Express - they might sell you a 4x8 sheet for $320.

I used a circular saw with a very fine toothed blade. You need to hold onto the saw really good to avoid a nasty kickback.

schuss
03-28-2002, 09:27 PM
Aluminum is easy to cut, just take your time. Let the speed of the blade do your work for you, and move it very slowly. This will keep your blade from wearing out and from kicking back.
