The tranny will not shift out of first gear unless I rev it up a bit, and then let off the gas. What is the problem?

Thanks
Dima

I think you have to be a paying member to use the search at TDR. Just in case you aren’t I did a quick search over there and most people that described a similar problem were told it was probably a bad sensor. There were a couple of sensor mentioned, mostly the pressure sensor. They also suggested that you try pulling the codes.

FYI I didn’t check but I think that you can use the search at http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/ for free.

I just had this same problem in my V10 turned out to be that second gear was sitting in the pan and needed to be rebuilt

Same thing happened to me. Are you positive you have 4 gears+ lockup. I'd have to mash on it in 1st and then let off and baby it to get to go into 3rd. I did it for a while until I could afford a REAL tranny.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your fawked most likely.

Dima,

I had a similar problem in my 96 auto CTD. Have you tried manually starting in first gear, and shifting to 2nd, and then drive? I had to drive like that a few weeks until the parts came in. IIRC it was either the gov. pressure sensor or the gov. pressure switch. It could have been either, I replaced both because I didn't have the time to isolate it further...

I think it was trying to start in 2nd or something like that. This was a few years ago- probably 40k+ miles- and I'm at 267k on the stock trans. There were also a few thousand miles of erratic t/c lockup and unlocking until I figured out I had a bad throttle position sensor, so it does have some wear on it. I want to upgrade to a 'bulletproof' aftermarket version soon. If you rebuild yours, look into DTT, Suncoast, Goerend Brothers, and ATS. These seem to be the leading rebuilders/parts suppliers.

I had the same problem in an 01 I had and it didn't need rebuilt. I don't remember what all it needed but it ran about $400 or so at a local trans shop.
