I need a coolant temp sensor for my XJ.

Here's the catch - It's a 1996 XJ with a 1996 PCM but it has a 1998 engine.
Online sources state that the -96 and 97+ are different part numbers.

SO:

Do I need to get the 97+ one to fit my engine block

OR

Do I need to get the -96 one to fit my computah (PCM)

?

*The coolant temp sensor that's in it right now hasn't worked ever - it came with the 98 longblock and never hooked up right to the 96 wiring harness

Put in a -96 temp sensor.

are you thinking it will fit the block just fine and that the part number difference is just round pins vs. flat pins?

It should fit the same. You will know when you pull the old one out. Only difference would be the thread size.

You need to use the one that matches the year of your PCM. If the later model one provides a different signal it will screw up the way your computer modulates fuel delivery, etc.

if the thread was not the same, only to get the thermostat housing of 96-
