I went with a 2.5 backspacing on my Ford D60 and D70. No grinding required

There is a crapload of info to be found here on the board.

Check out a few threads so you can get more than just one or two viewpoints and you can make a better decision and not regret it later.

Dont grind. Buy the rims. I tried grinding and then one day I was driving and lost my brakes. Guess what. One of my calipers busted in half. So I drove home slowley with A little bit of brakes then the other busted. I only ground as little as possible and that happened. So I bought the rims. This kind of stuff is what starts states diong inspections.

How much backspacing were you running on the old rims that caused you to grind the calipers too much?

When I bought my HP60 and told the guy I was going to run the Ford brakes he suggested getting calipers from an 80 -84 Ford. they are dual piston and mount on the '79 caliper satnds just fine. The difference is that they have a slightly different design which allows you to grind less when fitting a 15" rim.

He told me that 3.5" backspacing will be fine, but any more than that and I was asking for trouble. Here is an email from High Impact about backspacing. It helped me a lot in my decision. I chose 3.5" for my 15x10, 32 bolt, 8 lug beadlocks
**********************************************
Minimum Backspacing (without reversing the wheel shell) on the 8 lug wheels
is 3.5".

Explanation:

Wheels can be built with the large “bell” on the inside or reversed, with
the small bell on the inside. The “bell” is the area where the wheel shell
inside dia is almost 15”. Then the wheel shell ID narrows to 12.5”.

Normally we build wheels with the large bell on the inside. This is because
it is much harder to push the tire off the bead on the large bell, it can be
pushed in 2 or more inches without blowing a bead.

It is possible to build wheels reversed, with the small bell on the inside,
but if the tire is pushed in more than about ½ or ¾ of an inch, it blows the
bead.

People offer to sell wheels with small backspacing, this is what they
generally do, but they frequently do not mention that the inner bead
security is not as good this way. I mention it, and leave it up to you.

Minimum offsets with the large bell to the inside: 8 lug modular and all
star pattern wheels can be built down to 3.5 BS. All others the minimum is
3.75”.

Minimum offset with the small bell to the inside can go 1” or less in all
styles.

What do you think?

Good point if you're getting beadlocks... you'd want the beadlock on the inside of the wheel. But for a regular wheel, does it make a difference? You're going to pop a bead, would you be more likely to pop b/c the narrow side is on the inside of the tire rather than the outside? Methinks not...

I have 15x10 with 3.5" bs. If you go less then you have to reverse the wheel. With bead locks that makes it a pain to do tire work. I had to grind some, not alot. No safety was compromised. I run the chevy outers, single piston brakes.

THIS is the reason why I will NOT grind on my calipers ! ! !

Sure 15" rims will fit the rear, but for SAFETY up front, either go with the other calipers so you don't have to do any grinding at all, OR go with larger rims. I went with 6.75"x16.5" rims and ROCKSTOMPER beadlocks (www.rockstomper.com) and 37"x12.5" MTs. The rims I got are kinda rare(I think) and have the safety bead on the inner side. Even if the ones you get don't have a safety bead, you can always weld one in later IF you ever have a problem with it blowing out. Once the beadlocks are on and you put the 37s on the overall rim width is about 9". When I was trying to decide what to run, I called SCOTT at Rockstomper and he spent about 15-20 minutes easy giving me the pros and cons. He said that I came out way ahead in the $$$ department. I "stole" the rims at $20 for the set. The beadlocks were $430 to my door. And the 37s are only gonna be about $250 from DANIEL at USA 6X6 (www.usa6x6.com) . :rasta: :D

Good Luck on whatever you decide.

 yeah i'd still like to hear what kind of front end/calipers he was using. i ground on my chevy 60 to fit 15's and i can tell you they are not going to split!!!! heck i didn't even grid the part of the caliper that has the piston.

I don't care what caliper it is or how its ground down! I will NOT grind on such an important safety item no matter how many other guys have gotten away with it.

 How long was it before "old school" Hydraulic front suspensions were outlawed? There was a major incident where 5 Hispanic guys were killed when going down the freeway at the then 55mph and the Hydros went out pitching the front end into the pavement forcing the back 3 into the front, crushing the front 2, and 2 of the guys from the back through the windshield. And don't say its a fawkin Urban Legend! :flipoff2: I lived in that same town where it happened.

There is no way you can convince me to take a chance on anything like that.
Have a :) day anyway.

I was using The stock chevy Dana 60 calipers it came with. I had A 3.5 backspacing. I only ground what was needed. It looked safe. Just like A few of you are saying."It looks safe". Until you have to explain to somebodys parents How sorry you are for killing there child. Well it looked safe.
