I"ve been a Toyota guy for a long time now and I am considering venturing into the world of Scouts! I grew up with my dad and his '61 Scout 80 that was his father's before him (of course my dad sold it when I was about 12, but we won't talk about that!) so I have always had a soft spot for Scouts.
Anyway, I am starting to look for a Scout of the same era, and I am wondering if there are any particulars I should look for (pro/con).
I would like something in the 80/800 body style (I beilieve they are the same), and something pre-smog (CA).
Hopefully it will be fairly stock to start with - I would like to be able to drive it around town for in the short term so I can take the time to figure out how to build the truck and to stock up parts for the build.
Thanks in advance for your input - I've been reading this forum for a while and you all seem like a tight knit group - keep it up! :)

Look for an 800 with a v8. Unfortunately I can't tell you which years those are because I'm not exactly sure. Here (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=373713) is a thread on Scout tech, and a link to some stock Scout BBs.

Like UW said the V8 800's are the best in stock form, but if you plan on swaping motor/axles then the 80 would be the same...Now I have read the 80's are harder to get V8's into but I've seen it done:D

An IH v8, yeah. I hadn't realized just how big those things are untill I saw one sitting on a cart. If you buy an 80 to build, why bother with an IH motor?

thanks so much for the info - a 4 cyl. 80 model I think would be fine for now. I am not sure what motor I would go with down the road, but most likely, something more modern and FI. There is a ton of info on that first post that I will need to go thru - thanks Urban Wheeler!

What I was trying to say was get the 80 cuz all the crap on the 800 (motor, axles) has to go anyway....So it would be smart to pay less for the 4cyl when you plan on pulling it all anyway:D
The 61 would be a cool find because of the slide windows :grinpimp:

I have a 67 800. I am looking for a suspension system. Where did you buy the SOA con? What about lift springs, shackles, etc.

Any scout is as good an another when you plan to build it. I"m parcial to the early ones (61-71). Once you start building, you start replacing stuff anyway, I have several buildups on my site and you can read them here:

Take a look, I think you'll notice a reocurring theme, Scout II axles, SOA on 2" (or thereabouts) lift springs to fit 35-37". That is good for mile-to-moderate trail use. There are some builds going bigger 42" rubber for extreme trail use ~ just depends on what you're after when everything is said and done.
