I just bought a 88 samurai & was messing around with it in the yard. The transfer case is stuck in neutral. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

You are going to have to do a search. It is the most common problem in the world and you are going to get a lot of sh!t for not doing a search. But the bleeding hearts might help.

Pull the shifter, use a screw driver and alighn the rods so the groves makes a square and in stall part above. What the heck I'm a bleeding heart. The sheet comes with step by step instruction most of the time. If not do a search.

When mine got stuck I was on the job site 25+ miles from home. I gently pulled up on mine and tried to wiggle it back into 2hi or whatever. At least until you get a new sheet. You dont have to push it back into the driveway.

when mine gets stuck I smack the shifter a few times with the palm of my hand... till it comes loose. I need to stop being cheap and by a shifter sheet.

So I just bought an 88 samurai for dirt cheap and mine is stuck in nuetral as well and the transmission hs a crap load or slop and wont go into gear. So I checked and searched on this website about the shifting problems I opened up the top of the transmission and the transfer cases and Ijust wanted to say worn out is an understatement more like dissintegrated :nuke: there was a little bit of black goo around where the rubber bushing should be. So one set of problems down and a few more to go.

Thanks

this past weekend my little "slap the shifter" trick didn't work. I ended up ordering a new shifter sheet from Trail Tough. The Shifter Sheet was only 8 dollars. I can't believe that I didn't order one sooner. It was easy to install... only took maybe a half an hour... but the difference in shifting the transfer case is amazing. Its easier to shift in and out of 4wd then my 205 Transfer in my old ford.

Guys,

You can screw with this newb! lol, j/k

Honestly, I am about to buy a samurai. It is not stuck in 'NEUTRAL', but stuck in 2HI instead.

Is this the same problem? The samurai is cheap as it is, and in great shape...but the 4wd doesn't work because you can't shift the transfer case. If this is the only problem, it would be a cheap fix...and I could knock some money off the price.

So, to sum it up, is this a problem with it being stuck in neutral only, or will it get stuck in gear also?

I can drive this sammy still, just can't shift into and use 4wd.

BTW, I found this thread using the SEARCH forum, newbie haters!!!

Thanks
Shawn

When I bought mine it wouldn't go into gear because the transfer case was missing almost all of the mounting bolts. The shifter just moved the entire transfer case, instead of changing gears.

Same solution as if it were in neutral. Come on man, use your head for something other than a punching bag :shaking:
