ok im takin my engine apart and i got 2 of the 5 or 6 bolts off the flexplate off. the others are starting to round off even using a 6 point socket. 9/16ths and 14mm are both NOT working. will the blue tipped wrench work to heat them and break the locktite thats probly on there?? any other suggestions, i dont have access to air tools:(

I sometimes find that if you put a wrench or socket on a bolt it will not budge and may start to round off. Just as you described. What I find that works most of the time is to put a wrench on it that fits as tight as possible (14mm on a 9/16 bolt). Then use a deadblow hammer and hit it good 1 or 2 times. Dont POUND it. Try it.

yeah wrench and hammer = poor mans air gun. if not I would heat them up seeing as you will be needing new ones anyways.

HEating will cause the metal to expand, thus making it harder to get off.:skull:

Heating will make the bolt bigger, so you dont want to heat the bolt. You heat the nut, or what ever the bolt goes into. There for making the hole larger. Yes a physics nut can explain why it happens, I just know it happens.

When I have a bolt that will not come out I throw the heat to it.. Yes the heat causes the bolt to expand but it will contract back to normal size as it cools.. So heat it up because as Old Scout says the heat will break the bond between the locktight/rust or whatever is holding it together..
As far as what causes the metal to expand You dont need to be a physics nut just needed to pay attention in 6th grade science.. as heat is applied to the metal(or any substance for that matter) the molecules begin to move at a faster rate and as they move faster they move farther apart when they cool they they slow down and resume theyir normal position..

I had a couple round off too. I got one free with a cold chisel but the other was really stuck. I ended up welding a nut to the head of the bolt and then spraying it with WD40 as it cooled. Put a wrench on the new nut and the bolt came right out.

what happens is you heat the bolt, the bolt expands and gets tighter in the hole yes, but the bolt cannot stretch the metal in the crank cause it is too heavy so it expands in the only way available to it, lengthwise, this of course takes all the stretch out of the bolt and all you have to fight now it the sticktion in the threads.
