: Sammy on D44s w/ 100% Hydro Steering
TNToy 03-14-2002, 09:50 PM Stopped in a t the local 4wheelparts this afternoon, and I noticed Ian had a full-hydro steering setup on his (what's left of a) Sammy. I just happened to have my digital camera with me at the time.
I don't know anything about the hydro-steer on the Zuk - not even what pump he's running. All the specifics I know about it is it runs TJ coils in the back with hella-long extended ford radius arms, 36x12.50 SX's, and weighs 2500-3000 pounds, I think.
The flex is pretty balanced, which surprised me. It's been parked all the way up the ramp out front a couple times, and the front and rear seem to move the same amount.
It's been rolled/flopped plenty of times, and it shows. ;)
I'll be up there friday afternoon and he should be there, so I can probably get answers to any specific questions you have about the hydro steering or anything.

nuttzack 03-14-2002, 11:01 PM Thats awesome! I would like to do the same thing, does anyone know where the best place is to buy the stuff to do the fully hydraulic setup?
Wilson 03-15-2002, 01:01 AM I posted pics and some info last week in the gen 4x4 forum about the Bent and Twisted sami, which is on 38's and has full hydro steering. We used a saginaw pump to power the system, the orbital vale and ram are pretty basic and easy to hookup. The valve that we used requires 1.5 turns lock to lock, so the system is real fast. The only drawback to full hydro is that you can't drive it on the street (legally) it also steers so quick that high speeds become dangerous as the slightest movement translates into a large turn. Mike runs the sami at the Cal Rocs events. The setup had some bugs that we are going to work out by the Reno comp in May. Also switching from leaf springs in the back to tj coils and a two link suspension with a panhard to transfer more weight to the front for climbing. Currently the sami has tj coils in the front with a wishbone 3 link. The axle was moved forward 14 inches.
nuttzack 03-18-2002, 09:53 PM Hey wilson can you please give me some more specific specs on the orbital valve and ram you used with the saginaw pump? What size is the orbital valve and ram? Thanks! Oh yeah, what are the bugs that needed working out?
fatkid 03-18-2002, 11:02 PM :barf: that thing loooooooks Haaaaaaaaaaacked!
Wilson 03-18-2002, 11:16 PM I'll get the spec for you tomorrow when I go to work. If I remeber correctly, the orbital valve is just a basic charlyne, I'm not sure what the differences are, or if there are any. One of the bugs is going from a 7" ram to an 8" ram. The 7" ram didn't ahve enough throw out to turn lock to lock. The 8" ram is a little too long but an insert was made that goes inside the ram to limit it's travel to the correct distance, to keep the axle ujoints from binding. This measurement will vary from setup to setup, you'll have to determine the correct size spacer that you'll neeed. The only other problem was the length of the tie rod and the end choice. Mike was in a hurry and set it up using his basic 1 ton steering setup, which uses F350 ends. The passenger end is long and has a hole for the drag link. After repeatedly slamming into rocks, this end bent until the tie rod was rubbing on the diff cover. He's going to make a longer tie rod and switch to a short end on that side, which will eliminate that problem.

Ram, valve and lines are about $500.

Glad to know I wasn't alone on this one (I'm getting pretty anal about sh!t these days). Like the concept though, but everything else...from the too long double hose clamps to the booger welds give me heartburn in a big way. Maybe I've just been hanging around Incontrol and his brother too much:D .

I se no reason to build it like an "okie" lol:) Com Awn! I've seen high school kids do better work there 1st time.....
ROCKILLER 03-20-2002, 09:47 AM hey wilson where did you get the valve and ram? I've seen things in northern but I'm not exactly sure what I need or if that stuff is right for me
TNToy 03-20-2002, 10:02 AM It may not be pretty, or something I would feel safe driving on the street... but it works pretty well on the trail.

I'mn sure it works great, but look at it....booger for welds, ect.
canzuk 03-20-2002, 08:00 PM You can pick up an orbitrol valve at any fork lift shop, or if you can find a junk yard that has heavy equipment. The shop I work at uses them all the time on pettibone fork lifts. There are a few different sizes around the longer the valve the faster and more oil needed. You can also buy a selector valve and then have two and four wheel steer, also crab or four wheel steer. IT's all very easy to hook up.
nuttzack 03-20-2002, 09:36 PM Ordered my valve today from wagoner machine shop. It's self centering with 3 1/4 turns lock to lock. I think its a Porter and they said they're the best they have ever run. Bad thing is it takes 3-4 weeks to get here. Hope I make the Memorial day weekend run!
Wilson 03-20-2002, 10:44 PM Everything came form the local hydraulic shop. The guy that designed the system used to build forklifts for beekeepers.
