Is there any specific things to look out for ?
I was just wondering cause other than a large air cleaner with snorkel and pre filter I was gonna run it . Wash it off replace all u joints and replace the front axle when I get home. ? is can the sand get into the little breather for t-case and axles ?

damn you are being careful. i drive there alot and have never done any of that. id say just worry bout the air cleaner and steering parts should be lubed afterwards. other than that i dont know thats the extent of my maintainance

be sure to rinse the fins on your radiator really well. My old radiator was super rotted from the salt and sand.

John, rock wheeling and sand wheeling are like night and day! Where slow and steady rules the rocks, fast and bouncy rules the dunes. If your suspension can bottom out, you will do it in the dunes. Also expect that the wind will have scalloped the sand into a sea of small choppy waves that will chatter every part of your truck so that ANYTHING that is not properly tightened WILL vibrate loose in dune running mode.

Actually, this sounds a lot like trying to keep up with the NorCal80's on a Death Valley desert run.:flipoff2:

Marks right about bumps and suspension.
Check motor mounts, radiator mounts, battery mounts, everything mounts.

Wheeling the dunes is a perfect "shake down" run if you know what I mean.

Be sure to tie down any potential "headaches" inside your cab.

I'd add high engine revs. If you got a squealing PS pump, water pump or other accessory expect it to complain when you're hitting the rev limit at the base of a long steep slip face.

The air time is great, but the landings can be harsh...

I got out to pismo almost everyweekend and I just wash off the sand on my truck than park it on the front lawn over a sprinkler and turn them on to rinse odwn the undercarage. Also there's a car wash in Pismo that has an undercarage wash, which is a god idea afterwards. Here's the rig's I take out there. No pics of it in the dunes because I just got the new camera. Also they're both 2wd and never have a problem with getting stuck or even starting to get stuck. Another thing is air down to like 15 or 10psi and it makes the choppy shit alot smoother.

one thought John, you should get your airpressure down in them hawgs.......in the pigrun video it looked like you had about 25psi going through gatekeeper:laughing:

last time i was at pismo, i found sand on top of my tranny and t-case two years later while changing a clutch!

I am really hoping to go, Georg. My problem is that the weekend before S&T I am going to Calico, and Thanksgiving I'm going to Truck Haven Hills. I just have to budget my money & time, but I as it stands now, I'll most likely go. I, too, look forward to meeting you.

I side stepped a clutch once , 72 Bronco , 351W , 3.50's , 33's and stock 3 spd. ,,,,,,,, 3,500rpm and let it go ,,,,,,,,,,,,, on pavement ( wet ) , ,,,,,,,,,,,,,sheared all the bolts holding the ring gear to the carrier in the 9" rear and trashed the tranny output bearing....

Good, now you know how to drive in the sand..

As for prep... It is sand, noting much to it. When you are done, wash it out. Sand gets everywhere. Go wash it out afterwards. It really is not a big deal :)

If you are concerned about your air filter, get a Nylon to put over it ;)

Only prep I can think of is getting a bigger motor..

Launching it will help you find out if things are too short. Shocks, brake lines, driveshafts etc... You'll know quickly if things aren't right.

that is the Geolandar, it is a customer/friends desert truck. I do not have any other pics of the truck in action. That was the 1st test run in the sand with paddles. We were too busy driving to take pictures. The truck was apart for almost 7 years till just resantly.
