Sup ya'll, new guy here. :) I did some searching but couldn't find anything directly related to my specific problem.

I have a 2wd 94 XJ. It has the 8.25 rear axle, aw4 tranny. I installed a 3" OME lift and 31's. Now I have a developed a leak at the rear of the tranny where the driveshaft goes in. I've replaced the seal 3 times now and every time the leak comes back. It's so bad I have to keep adding tranny fluid every 2 or 3 days to keep it shifting good.

Could I install a 1" t-case drop to help alleviate this problem?

I'm starting to think the rear driveshaft is at too steep of an angle.....or at least it binds at certain angles as the suspension cycles.

This is my daily driver which I now plan to sell. I only need to fix this problem so I can get a decent price out of it. Clearance is not an issue here.

And before anyone asks....I have thought of converting it to 4wd but now have a 91 YJ I plan to build up.:D

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Yes I realize that guys. It doesn't matter if it doesn't have a transfer case or not. Both share the same crossmember. The t-case drop lowers that crossmember which the tranny rests on.

I had a 4WD XJ with the same setup and I never had problems. The added length of a 2WD driveshaft should make it nearly impossible to be binding. Are the u-joints in your driveshaft still good?

If your selling it, why do you care? Just inform the driver and get it off your hands now before you put more $$$ into it.

you know that's a good idea too, I never thought to check the u-joint. I'll do that also.

but how does the yoke look?
does it have a groove worn into it?

is the slip yoke's surface nicely polished, or rough & textured.

Bad U-joint's & badly out of balance/bent shaft could also kill the seal.

No way should you need an X-member drop with 3" on a 2wd XJ.

:derogatory catch phrase here: :flipoff2:

Tailshaft bushing is worn

Thanks for the replies guys. I decided against the x-member drop and just replaced the seal. The seal has been holding up better although there is still a leak. Just a smaller leak.

U-joints are fine, the yoke is still smooth with no grooves in it. I do think the tailshaft bushing is worn. While I was under there I noticed about a 1/4" of play in the yoke. It's only a matter of time until the new seal goes out. I'd prefer to replace the bushing rather than pumping the tailshaft housing full of silicon like Blackskies said.

Never done this before. I'll keep searching the site for more tips. Any tips/procedures would be really helpful.

Thanks again

Driveshaft is to short...Drop the crossmember 1 inch and hope for the best....
The 1 inch drop is cake to make yourself...

Use the slip yoke off a YJ if you shaft is to short
It is about 1-1.5" longer than the XJ slip yoke.
Just measure to make sure it isn't too long.
If it is, it's easy to sorten it up with a grinder or lathe.
