I just recently changed the transfer case gears and was noticing that I only saw one brass thrust washer in the case when I pulled it apart it was laying in the bottom of the case when I split it, I assumed it was the one for the counter gear against the deep side of the case. That is where I installed it when it all went back together.I really was not looking for two since I did not know that another one existed but I guess there is a second one in there somewhere.my question is where does it go and could it possibly still be in the case after the swap where it should be with out me knowing it?just dont want to tear something up

you should have had on the counter gear shaft thrust washer, needle bearing, spacer, needle bearing, and last but not least a second thrust washer. Sometimes they'l stick to the end of the counter gear when you remove it and you wont notice it's there might want to look or they'l stick inside the case. but if you cleaned your case before instlling the new gears you should have seen if not you should have stopped and found it. expensive counter gear rubbing directly on to case = BAD

i had a bad experience with this. when i put my case back together the other thrust washer fell off into the bottom of the case and when i was climbing a VERY steep hill it was washed into the gear teeth and chewed up extensively. no damage occured to the gears but the washer was toast. i got another one in there and everything is fine now. i did notice some slight wear on the side of the case but not enough to be too serious, i caught the problem before i had more than 500 miles on the new gears so no problems since then!!??!!:rasta: :rasta: :rasta: :smokin:
