Are all 14Bolt rear axles created equal? I would like to get one from the j-yard and shorten it to fit my application (about 55" WMS to WMS). What should I look for? What should I watch for?

Thanks,
Chris

55"? the drums would almost rub the center sections :D
Fullwidth 14 bolts are 67" and you can get a dually 14 bolt that is 63"

Go wide and just run the 63" uncut

I don't think I can. State regulations say you can't have tires hangin past your fender wells...and I really don't want to spring for Xenon flares (waste of moola IMHO). Maybe a 14bolt isn't the answer...maybe I want a D60? Regardless, I'd still like to know what 14bolts are out there, differences between them and which ones to stay away from.

The info above is for full float 14 bolts with a 10.5" ring gear. You can get a SF 14 9.5" but I would stay away for your application. You also can narrow a 60 but it will need 14 bolt/70 outers if you want to upgrade to a 1.5" diameter axle.

I have had no problems with my tires sticking out 5 inches past the fenderwell and I know there are plenty of cops that have wanted to ticket me. Ofcoarse once you get the ticket your screwed. If you ask me the width is worth it for stability reasons alone.

Fender Flares....

1 ton and some 3/4 tons came w/ the giant 13" drums. Most 3/4 ton came w/ smaller stuff (still over-kill for you but weigh less if you don't want to go disc)

If you want to use a Detroit you need a open carrier (4-pin). Gov-Lock carriers are 3-pin

The carrier split is 4.56 and up.

If you don't mind it looking a bit hillbilly....

Run a single dually wheel on each side ;)

Might limit your tire choices to a Q78/16 Swamper or 9.00R16/11.00R16 Michelin XL - not that its a bad thing :D

ummm...
the big difference is that some are semi-floating and some are full floating.

Which do you think will actually cost more? Flares or cutting down an axle. Make the flares quick removeable and roll. Flares are a waste, but they are still a helluva lot cheaper than cutting down an axle.

On your 14 deal. Don't worry about the brakes. Get a set of brackets off of Shaker and put discs back there. You're gonna have to cut it to make it work, so it doesn't matter which one you get, just get a FF14.

Wait, you said that the open carrier has 4 pins, and the gov-lock has 3 pins right? What pins are you talkin about? Where are they located? Sorry for the dumb question but i'm a newbie.

when you take the cover off of a 14 and spin the carrier around, you'll see either 3 shafts or 4. You can't miss them. They are right in the middle of the carrier and are about 1". It's easier to show than describe.

This shows the 4 shafts that are an open carrier. The Gov-loc carrier will only have 3 of these.

New York isn't that tough to get away with wide stuff. Look at JD's Offroad's Street Legal Wrangler on 44 Boggers. JD's Website (www.jdsoffroad.com) I would put some Quick disconnect flares on it and roll with it. Don't do any stupid stuff and you'll be fine.
