In 1980 the IH engine has a different type of cooling setup then prior years.

My question is this setup better??

Here's a pic of the 1980 setup

Its a 304 engine. I have an older 304 and 345 and both of them have the big cast iron neck with the by pass built in. I know in 1980 they change the design, now I am switching the 80's engine out and wondering if I this setup is better. Looks easy enough to switch out the parts. Or is the only gain an easier by pass hose to change as you can see 3/4 hose going from the pump to the back of the T-Stat housing.

No! It is not a better setup.... IMO that is. With the prior years, they had the bypass block under the thermostat housing. With the proper style of thermostat installed, the bypass passage would be blocked off when the thermostat opened. So when the engine is fully warmed up and the thermostat is wide open, all the coolant if forced to pass through the radiator. With the 1980 style, there is always coolant flowing through the bypass circuit... even when the engine is fully warmed up. I personally think the older design provided better cooling and converted my 1980 345 back to the older design.

Here is another pic from the other side. You can see the intake is different, has raised cast housing and temp sender or valve?

That just a "fancy" elbow fitting tapped on the side for the temp gauge sending unit.

Thanks Torc.

And no there is no more room to install a bigger distributor. :shaking:

They did it to make room for a huge smog air cleaner. The air cleaner had a ring of active carbon around the carb throat. The carbon ring would soak up escaping gas fumes from a parked hot engine.
