Anybody seen this with a Warn FF? I know this axle has been abused pretty bad before I got the Scout, but I just want to make sure I dont need to add a truss or something to the new housing.

Here is the new axle.

TIA

Sorry. It's a 74 SII on 33's mostly on road some off road although there will likely be more and more trail use in the future.

I *personally* don't think the FF kit had anything to do with that crack.. more like abuse/use and fatigue.

However, I HAVE heard that since the stock ("thin") IH housing do tend to flex, people have had issues with the FF kits blowing out the locking hubs. Many have switched to drive flanges to counter this. But if you have the opportunity, adding a simple and clean truss wouldn't be a bad idea.

I think a good argument can be made it's the FF's fault.

Here's my reasoning.

In a SF axle setup, the tube holds the weight AND the axle shaft supports the weight.

TWO stresses on your axle shaft - torque and load bearing.

But it relieves the housing of some stress.. so they make the housing weaker.

Thus a 60FF housing is heavier than a 60SF or 44SF.. and why a FF front D44 is heavier wall than the SF rear.

When you go to a FF setup on a SF housing, you now make that weak housing support the weight of the vehicle by itself.

Add a truss to make up for it.

I've seen it many times. Scout housings are junk. 90% of the ones I check for straightness are bent. Its an urban jeep legend that says Scout housings are the best thing ever.

I've seen that same failure before on a housing I was running under one of my SII's before. No full floating conversion was done on it, I just abused the thing out on the rocks and the housing got tired of it and split open on the underside of the axle tube, right next to the stock spring perch. After that, I got a 60 housing and narrowed it myself and have been running Scout shafts in it, no more problems in that area on that rig. :D The stock D44 housing is just too thin to put up with long term abuse. ;)
