Are rockwell and high pinion axles the only way to get a high drive line like this? Has anyone takin a more common axle and made something like the rockwells??

Portals
X2. You can't beat a portal axle for pinion clearance.
Volvo portals are light and give good clearance.

it appears to be similar to a shackle (d ring) for hooking up a rope. it looks like it is on a hook or loop mounted to the frame.
just the angle of the pic makes it look attached.

iv circled what i think is the frame (red) tow points/hooks in blue, and the mounting brackets for the bar in brown.
anyone else see something dif ?

Toyota FJ-80's came with high pinion diffs that fit the Toy 8" mini-truck housings as well. I'm sure that there are others, Ford's are just the most plentiful relatively speaking.
