Im in the middle of removing my aw4 from my xj and it seems the previous owner stripped the top bolt out and its on so tight in such a bad place my vice grips and or other wrenches wont turn it. Anyone got any ideas on how to bust it off? Its the bolt right on top of the bell housing and is really in tight spot for wrenches and especially a socket. How can i get it off and its urgent for my Heep is in pieces.

Feel free to move this to wherever the new forum is WACK!:(

I am in the middle of doing the same thing right now... You do realize those bolts are E12's and not a standard 6 point, right? Hope that helps. Either way, I found the best way to get to those is lower the transmission as much as you can and get to the bolts from behind the transmission with a ratchet and a whole bunch of extensions.

I just welded a nut that fit around the inverted torq's head and got it out like that.

use a hole saw and cut through the floor over the bolt, then its easy to get to. And it's still easy to plug the hole and under the carpet you wouldn't even know it is there.

I had the same problem getting mine out ... those bolt suck. I torched the heads off mine , put water soaked rags around them and went to town ... a little awkward but it did the job. Replaced the bolts with proper hex head bolts now a socket, a few extensions and I'm in bussiness.

Hope this helps

I had the same problem with an XJ I stripped. I had the engine/tranny/tcase combo sitting on the ground and still had to use the sawzall to get the bolt head off.

thx for all the help guys, i ended up using like 3 feet or 4 feet worth of extensions and droppin the tranny almost all the way down (my poor motor mounts) so its off in out. My tranny has a leak so im either going to try and fix the broken seal(think its the input shaft to torque converter) and if it cant be fixed most likely another AW4, never had any problems been strong for me, but a sm420 would be pretty sweet. Im on love with autos in the rocks, they r the only way in my book. If anyone needs a cheap AW4 thats 21 spline i will sell it for 100$ it was a donation from a friend when he heard my troubles. also i have the np242J off that tranny in perfect con.
