: Ultimate Sierra Nevada Trip?

Have not been around since last years trip planning, but I am back. Had so much fun last summer, just got to do it again. Instead of 7 days this year, I am going for the gusto with 13 days in the Sierra Nevadas. Last year I did the Con, then the Dusy and loved em both, despite the Little Sluice Box scratches on my beautifull new door.( A replacement for the one caved in the summer before at Tellico, on the Helicopter Pad) Anywho, I will have a few other Monteros tagging along again. Nothing gives a workout like hiking the trail several times a day to spot stockers and rookies. This year I am planning to start with Swamp Lake, then the Dusy and work north to the Con, and eventually onto Fordyce. Question is, are there any must do trails, or handy connection trails between the North End of The Dusy and The South End of the Con, or North of the Con or Fordyce. Would love to avoid as much highway driving as possible, maybe too tall an order, but this New Mexico boy does not like that Valley traffic! Got a little more knowledge of the area now, and can find California in the road atlas now, so lets hear it...........

If you dont like the valley, then just drop over the mountains to the hwy 395 side from Dusy.....

Well, I'm not saying it would be a speedy drive, although a nice one, he could go through Yosemite and drop out in Lee Vining. Long way to go, but it keeps him out of the Valley!

Definately do Barret Lake trail if it is open when you are here. You can do it as a day trip if you want or it is a nice place to camp. Sounds like fun.

After running Swamp lake, Dusy, and Coyote, and maybe a day on Bald mountain, I would head to Oakhurst, and run the 2 trails above Bass Lake. Cheapo Saddle, has a trail called "Spirit World", and one of the most beautiful trails I have ever been on, is the trail to "Big Shuteye, Lookout". You drive along granite domes that rival Yosemite. You can find Cheapo saddle and Big shuteye, on any Forrestry map, but youll need someone to help direct you to Spirit World. Good camping, with plenty of wood on both of those trails. You could then drive through Yosemite, and drop down over the pass to 395, and climb back up to Tahoe on Kingsbury grade through Gardnerville.

We will have to plan the Hammers into your trip, then we could run the Hammers, and spend a couple more days on the Hammers, then some more Hammers, and then the Con and Fordyce. Then scoop up the pieces and put them on thhe trailer for the ride home.

Ok guys, yes Barrett Lake and Strawberry I am aware of, and probably should have mentioned. And, I was thinking of just driving the back paved roads around Yosemiti. Would an early morning start avoid traffic? Ok H8, now your talking my language. Got my Gazetteer open, I find Bass Lake, and the trail to Big Shuteye Lookout. How about some more directions to Spirit World(what a great name) and Cheapo Saddle?

Instead of driving up 395, why not just take the 49 up? There's some pretty cool little towns on the way, and it hits the 50 in Placerville.

Well, I was REAL dissapointed last year passing the sign to Swamp Lake trail, but repairs from the Box delayed me a day, and I simply ran out of time. Now who tightened those hub bolts last????:rasta: With 13 days this year, I aint taking no prisoners! I know it sounds ambitious, but believe or not I wheel like that every year! Its a disease I tell ya. Everyone I bumped into on the trail last year, or chatted with as they fixed there junk, said Swamp Lake was one of the best, so it will be the warm up trail this summer. Oh, my trip is August 22- September 3, starting at Swamp Lake and working north. Making sure we start the Con the following Thurs, because the weekend I found is not the way to go for the Con, if you enjoy SLEEP that is! :barf:

lloyd, before you take off call me and I'll meet you up here at the con. It will be between events so I should have the time. beside the D-50 might just be up to another trail, it should have the v-8 in it by then.

I posted my trip details on the Wire a little while ago. I am asking anyone interested in Leg II of the trip, Con to Fordyce, to be on the Dam at Loon Lake by 8:00am, Thursday August 29th. The rest of the group may be camped at Loon Lake or Barrett Lake the night before, I am not sure. BUT, the 29th am is a deadline to start the Con before the Friday afternoon Zoo starts, so I will be there. This is also the only other meet up date/ time I am allowing, other then Day 1. We are going to Spider the First Night and Buck Island for the second night, then out. If a few want to run the Box, that will most likely happen Friday AM before heading to Buck Island.
