: Help!!! Northern California Trailer Rental Problem

I'm sure this has been covered before. The search function isn't working for me today for some reason though. Please bear with me...

I need to rent a trailer to haul a free titled parts rig from Burney Ca to Windsor Ca. U-Haul doesn't allow a Scout with 31x10.5x15s to be hauled on their wimpy trailers (says so in their counter computer). They list 3900Lbs MAX hauled vehicle weight and a max tire size of 235x75x15!

Hertz equipment and a local rental place (Action Rents) both have car or equipment trailers that'll handle the load. However, they won't rent out a trailer if you're gonna drive it more than 100 miles from them.

Here's my problem: Do I lie to U-haul and tell them that I'm hauling a 74 Bronco with 235s (an allowable vehicle) or do I lie to one of the other outfits and tell them that I'm only going to someplace like Sacramento? Either way, if I get into an accident I'm going to have to eat a BIG shit sandwich as I'll have provided fraudulant info on the rental paperwork.

Can someone PLEASE point me towards another option??? No, I don't have the $$$ to buy a trailer right now! That'd be the ideal, but isn't possible for the immediate future.

Do they really ask you what size tires the towed vehicle has? I've used uhaul a couple times to take my 4runner on 36's to Tahoe and have never been asked. They only ask year, make and model of vehicle.

tire size - they use straps that go over the tire to tie the front of the vehicle down with.

The web site reservation computer asks it, as has the counterperson in the Santa Rosa store. Did the trailer you rented have straps that go over the tires? If so, did you have any problems securing 36s? What store did you go to? Thanks a bunch.

Rented a truck and trailer to tow my jeep back from SLC to vancouver. The jeep has 37's on it. The straps are not even close to fitting over the tires. I asked them if they had longer straps for the tires. U-haul said no they dont. They even looked at my jeep on there traielr in there lot and didn;t say anything. so.....

Find a small local rental yard!!!!! They usually have better prices and are alot easier to work with... Or if all else fails lie, and lie alot!!!:D It would have to be a MAJOR accident for either rental place to find out about it....

I once told U-haul that I was hauling a nissan maxima instead of the nissan truck I was really hauling. The lady on the phone told me I was not allowed to haul a truck with the Bronco2 I had at the time.... Ohh well that was one funny looking maxima....:flipoff2:

Lie (1993 Hyundai Sonata :D ), use your own insurance company, straps will go over the axle instead of the tire.

Take it over the axles.

Tell Uhaul that you're hauling a VW Bug. They won't know the difference if you don't tak it to them. When my trailer was broke and I wanted to take me TJ on 35's up to Pismo, this worked for me.

EDIT: Umm, what the retodded one said.

Thanks guys. So far it looks like U-Haul is the best option. Just to be sure I'm understanding things right; I can use the tire straps over the axles if they won't fit over the tires? I'm not concerned about crushing brake lines on the towed rig.

Just plan on the very likely chance that when you show up with your RESERVATION on the trailer that it won't be there.

This has happened to me 3 times now and I was screwed without a trailer available anywhere else because a reservation means absolutely NOTHING to Uhaul. :mad3:

Don't I know it... I reserved (on their web site) a 26' truck TWO WEEKS before I had to use it for a move. The local people I talked to to 'confirm' the reservation a couple of days before my move told me to "show up right at 7:00AM to be sure that you get a truck, because there will be a LOT of people wanting to get a truck".

WTF!!! What good is a 'reservation' then??? On the day of the move,I showed up at 7:00AM, waited for 30 minutes for them to even open the doors, and then got told "sorry, your truck isn't here, will you take a 14' truck instead?"
:shaking:

Don,

I just made a reservation with The Rental Place in Rohnert Park as you suggested! Talked to a very helpful guy named Chris.

Their phone # has changed since you dealt with them. The new # is 707-584-9217. The 9214 # comes up as being disconnected. I did a web search for them and was given both #s. Fortunately, the 9217 # works fine.

When I get back I'll send you a PM as I owe you a  or other beverage of your choice at the least.

Thanks again. :grinpimp:

We had a similar problem a couple years back at the Uhaul yard in Pismo. We had a Samurai blow up a ring gear. So we ran over to Uhual to rent a trailer to bring it home. They refused to rent a trailer based on the 31" tires. Ughh. We eventually told them we had a spare set of small tires to swap on and they let us rent the biggest most expensive car trailer they had... for a Samurai. We could have put 2 Zuks on the trailer.

check to find out where you have to pick up the trailer at. i rented a 6X12 in Redding and when i showed up at the yard, it was empty, and was told that u-haul was suppose to send you the info on where to pick up the trailer. so i got to drive an hour in my direction home to pick up the trailer, then go back and load it up, and turn around and head back home. fawkin retards at

I had thought about that... The difference between 235x75x15s and31x10.5x15s isn't that much. The U-Haul trailer instructions state that you must have six inches of strap left over after putting it over the tire and through the ratchet. A little airing down would go a long way.

That happened to me with a U-Haul truck rental. They did get back to me with the pickup info however. I did have to add an extra 30 useless miles to the truck rental (which they charge $.99/mi-$1.39/mi for) because the truck was located 15 miles south of the house I was moving out of (I was moving north). They didn't tell me about this little detail until AFTER I had already made my reservation. :mad3:

That's one of the MANY reasons why I'm going to avoid U-Haul when possible.
