hey all,
just picked up a jeep j10 pickup with d44's front and rear..have a few questions
1. it has a three speed auto...which one could this be? can't find a "this year had this type of tranny" link
2. t-case has an "emergency 4x4" knob in the glove box...is this 4hi or something only to be used in an "emergency"...lol...
3. also is this a quatratrac unit? as it has a lo range knob near the floor under the driver...
4. i am gonna get a bj's offroad lift...but i want to know if the add a leaf and rear block set-up is o.k. or if i should get the full replacement rear springs? also will i have get a cv driveshaft for the rear with a 6inch lift?
5. im gonna get a lockrite for the reaR. in a DANA44 rear, does one have to remove the carrier to install or can you leave it in?
(or...thick or thin ring gear?)
thanks...some of these are newbie questions so flame on...lol

My 77 J-10 is just like what you described. It had a 360 with the TH-400 (but with the AMC bell housing) the quadratrac t-case and the funny knob on the g-box. The knob is stupid, I never used it. The low range in the t-case is good. mine also had D44s (with the rear off-set)
I went with Skyjacker springs at all fours and LOVED it! well worth the coin, and I used their Hydro shocks. I launched my truck several times through the air for 30 to 50 feet and never had a problem. It ran 35s and with a 3" body lift (made easy out of tubing, welded to frame and bolted to the body) it could easily fit 39.5s. I hate blocks unless it's not going to be a wheeler, you will hate the blocks and chances are the springs could use replacing.

thank you for the input, krazy krakker....i might have a a chance at a t18/dana20...from a 79 wagoneer...
would they bolt up to my j10?...the waggy has d44s and a 360 just like mine...i like the idea of gear-driven rather than chain driven stuff

That stupid knob locks the transfer case in 50/50 mode. You can't climb a hill without locking the case up using the knob, because in normal operation, all power will be transferred to the front wheels.

TH400

If the vacuum lines are hooked up & everything is working right, the e-drive locks the system into 50/50 torque split. It pulls vacuum off the back of the motor to a vacuum ball on the firewall, that runs down to the top/rear of the QT case.
To shift in, run it to 3-5 mph, drop tranny in neutral, flip switch, drop back in drive. Same coming out.
3. also is this a quatratrac unit? as it has a lo range knob near the floor under the driver...
Yes. You have the 1339 & not the 1305. Not sure how many j-trucks came w/o the low range; I think that was more common on the Wag/Cherokee.

I'm running 4" leaf with a rear add-a-leaf block and it's ok for mild wheeling, which is what my Wag sees. If I didn't have the funky short leafs (pre 76 has shorter rear leaves than 76-91), I would much rather have full replacement. I am waiting for the day I shit my lift block out, but so far so good.
5. im gonna get a lockrite for the reaR. in a DANA44 rear, does one have to remove the carrier to install or can you leave it in?

Not sure, but it's not that hard to do either way. You may want to regear anyway. Stock was 3.07, tow package had 3.54; if you're going 6" lift I'm guessing you're going bigger on the tires, and may need more oomph.
i might have a a chance at a t18/dana20...from a 79 wagoneer... would they bolt up to my j10?...
Yes. Grab all the misc parts (flywheel, clutch parts, linkage, clutch pedal, etc.), or it might cost more than you think. I think you'll have to rework your driveshafts.

I'm running rustys 4" front springs and they work fairly well. The rear has AAL's and blocks (real crap). If you plan on wheelin it for a while get some good springs and run decent shocks (my truck bounces all over the trail).
For the money the truck is more fun than my TJ
