: Building a buggy for/by CalRocs
ToyFamily 03-15-2002, 10:30 PM Well I sold my rig, got a DD/2wd to 4wd convertion project and have been working on the Bent and Twisted sammi I now have been infected with the CalRoc bug and I am starting on a rock buggy to try to enter into the Reno CalRocs!!! and for Carnage on the Con (in which I will need a club to foster me :D ) I have hours upon hours of extensive design(in class dootling) and planning (in class day dreaming) into this buggy....
It's going to be single wide Rock Me built chassis out of 1.75 tubing, 105" wheelbase, have all toyota running gear, including marlin crawler 5.29's, detroits, wrangler leaf sprung front, sway-a-way coilover rear with 3-link, on 38 x 11.50" boggers. Being a low buck college student I have asked for the help of a few sponsors (negotiations pending then I'll post em), for some of the parts and money, but I already have most of the parts laying around (it's amazing how many vehicles you can actually build if you use all the spare parts around that you accumulate ), I just need hi-steer, a fuel cell, tires, and a few odds and ends (**sublimintal message if anyone wants to help out***:) ), the rest is just materials... :D
Progress write ups will be posted as I go
WWWOOOOHOOO , I love this buildin' shiot!!!
I have alot of experience and design ideas into this but question for those who have frequented CalRocs and/or Arca:
what did you see which was efficiant on a rig, or what would you change about something you saw to make it more competitive? thanks for your response....

ToyFamily 03-16-2002, 01:44 PM thanks Jess,

ToyFamily 03-16-2002, 04:25 PM here's a preview of what I'm thinking but I'll will be making alterations along the way......forgive the rough sketch it's an in class dootle...:D
Randy 03-16-2002, 04:35 PM CALROCS compedators rigs must have two seats side by side. YOU cant run a single seater:(

this is true so just make it a little wider in the middle and keep the rest narrow.
ToyFamily 03-16-2002, 05:27 PM Open/Unlimited Classification
Brakes
All brakes must be good working order. Emergency brake must be in good working order.
Body
A hood must cover the entire top of the engine. Engine firewall/cowling is required for safety and must separate the passenger compartment from the engine compartment.
Frame
Boxed or semi-boxed mainframe material made of a magnetic steel or mainframe tubing material no less than 1.5” in outside diameter magnetic steel are required.
Seating
A single seat is approved, if a spotter is to ride, a second seat must be available.
Tires
All tires must be D.O.T. approved by sidewall designation.
this is true for the Pro Modified......but I have had this design on my mind for 8 months now and will build it this way and compete in the Unlimited/open (did I read wrong ???).....I may not have all the hype goods for this event but I have some designs in mind when I have time to work them out..(i.e. rear steer, hydo...etc).....If I can go in there with my buggy built out of my spare parts, and help from others with my limited budget, and even hang with some of the guys who drop major $$$, I already won.....we all started this sport for the fun....
I just got of the phone with Sky Manufacturing and Sky is going to sponsor me, helping me out with a lot of stuff :D
Sky-manufacturing.com
thanks Sky
thats a neat looking chassis
i like the 4 link and leaf spring setup on my rig and think that will work great in cal rocs
i would just start out with full hydro. snortclown can tell ya how to do it pretty inexpensive.
having a t case that you can disengage the rear wheels is a HUGE advantage. if you can't afford a atlas then a dana 300 will work fine.
skip the 4 banger and get a 4.3
birfields suck!!! at a minimum get some longfields. ( but will just start breaking axle shafts )
just my .02
ToyFamily 03-16-2002, 05:48 PM thanks for the input camo...on the 4.3 and the other running gear...I've got all this toy stuff laying here, and can't offord to go buy stuff (especially in seven weeks)...besides the only two times I have broken is when you were there (in the sluice box) so I figure I'll make you go on a beer run when I'm up,....your bad voodoo.... :flipoff2:
Sillyneck 03-16-2002, 06:02 PM hell yea :D sponsors are cool....can I have 1? :D Camo is bad voodoo...I seen him in some voodoo ceremony w/ sheep, velcro gloves, boots, and whatnot :D
bad voodoo LOL ya i do have that effect on people :D
anyhow competition is a bit more agressive than running the little sluice and you should be prepared for more breakage to come whether i am there or not :D
sounds like a cool project. can you really do it that quick ?
Big Rich 03-16-2002, 06:08 PM Get it awn nick....see ya in Reno, oh yeah don't sleep in....you'll not have the time....:D :D :D

ToyFamily 03-16-2002, 11:19 PM It begins with a sacrifice :mad3:....mmmmwwwwwhhhaaaa

I'm probably gonna scrap the toy rear and go with a full width 9"
Sillyneck 03-17-2002, 11:28 AM Mommy? >:D
ToyFamily 03-21-2002, 05:42 PM The engine tranny and t-cases are on a chassis stand waiting for this week where I have spring break off and will be in the shop constantly and the tube will be flyin'. I'm ordering the hydro stuff tomarrow!!!! and I should be getting my hi-steer arms and tie rod this week in which I have to thank Sky Manufacturing for as well as my links and all the custom tabs and mounts they are cutting for me!! And Bent & Twisted 4WD for the help on my parts (my coilover springs and dual rate kits that just came in), Jess from Hi-Angle Drivelines for my shafts, and of coarse ME, Rock Me bumpers for building my chassis :D
