I swear I saw a thread on this a while ago but all the searches came up with D44's and D60's. So has anyone done this? Pics, things to watch out for, etc. My rig is down at my work right now, having some more concrete poured at the house. I am in the proccess of nipping and tucking things for better clearances and started looking at the front diff. It looks fairly simple although something will have to be done for where the third member engages the housing at the bottom. If you guys want something to kill time do a search for "shaved diffs" on the internet  :D

I'm going to do mine. I  the drain plugs on my axles. They always want to drain in the middle of a trail.

That's the one, I didn't try searching for diff plug. The front low profile drain plug is starting to get ground down after only 4 months :D

bud from budbuilt.com has done this, ask over on the toyota board for the pics. there not on his website but he has them somewhere. he welded 1/4 plate at the bottom and also made a diff guard with it. you a diff bolt to drain the fluid.

is it really worth all the work for what about 1/4" more clearance?

I'm with poppycock looks like alot of work for a 1/4"

it may be 1/4 inch right under the third, but when the diff is rotated to point at the tcase and shavedtight to the ring gear in the back, the gains are closer to 3/4 inch, which is the same clearance gained by tires 1.5 inches larger....

But all the cutting a welding looks cool. 3/4inch is 3/4inch clearance is clearance. it doesn't look that hard to do.

This is very easy to do I did my old 4runners diffs and I've already done the ones for my new sami. Took me about 1/2 hr a diff the third and fourth time around. If you ask me its worth it not only for the clearance but for extra strength in the 1/4 plate.

My diff is rotated so I would gain more, not to mention my drain plug is getting ground into oblivion.

The clearance is definitely worth it. With rotated diffs, you can gain like 3/4 to 1''. Next project? :D

Yeah, the limiting factor is the third member flange. Little more involved than shaving a Dana diff cover. The main gains are a beefed section where the rocks hit (the front of the 'cover' is about 1/8" thick) and not having a drain plug to destory.

Here's the article Chris Geiger wrote about clearancing his Toy rear axle: http://www.off-road.com/toyota/trailtoy/rearaxle/index.html
