: large coil overs...homemade?
kaiserm715 03-16-2002, 07:13 AM i'm looking to set up my rockwell front axle on a 4 link system and am looking for some large coil overs. i've talked to the guys at King shocks (very nice people) and just think that this is more shock than what i really need (could read, more than i want to pay). this won't be a competition truck but but i am running 53" tires and dealing with a large amount of sprung weight. does any one have any ideas of alternatives to king shocks...cheaper supplier or even a way to construct some my-self?
elf_cruiser 03-16-2002, 02:08 PM Did you ask King about the "King Kong" 4" bore coil-overs. Those seem pretty beefy. Other than that, call a monster truck shop, since it sounds like that's what your building, hehehe. Find out what they use. Or, buy some normal coil-overs, and add a few more shox at each corner...
NAH!
Good Luck, man!

He said the normal King's were too expensive. I don't think the 4"ers will be any better...

mytzlflick 03-16-2002, 02:24 PM if price is a big issue here go with f-150 coils and shocks outside em or down the center, coilovers don't make more travel they just make mounting easier, if the shock moves 14 inches thats all that matters.
kaiserm715 03-16-2002, 03:35 PM the king shocks were almost 500 bucks each for the 2.5" resivore. those are with dual rate springs and everything, pretty much made with as much travel as i need. the guy did tell me about some 3" shocks that were shipped to real monster truck teams. they were even more and we both agreed that they were overkill for what i'm doing.
the truck on the cover of fourwheeler is similar to what i'm looking at doing. coils up front leaf springs in the rear (until i save some more money for the rear coils). the builder of that truck has his own monster truck, but i believe they are something that he made out of components. i've looked for his business # but it wasn't listed. i do have his home phone but who wants to be called at home. i'd like to figure out a way to make something work. if i do i'll keep you posted.
fcfred 03-16-2002, 05:13 PM this might sound crazy, since i don't know anything about shocks, but what about front motorcyle shocks? These are pretty big and they may have something there that would work for your project, or at least you could tear some apart from a junk yard and start looking at it for hours on end to figure out something
high traveler 03-16-2002, 11:46 PM motorcycle shocks would work, yeah cuz, ya know, they are just made for handling all kinds of large amounts of sprung weight:flipoff2:
rockbound 03-18-2002, 09:17 AM actually i saw someone do the motorcylce front shock thing at big dogs last year, It seemed to work very well, he also used a 4 cylinder engine out of a front wheel drive honda turned it sideways and used the cv,s as his front and rear driveshafts!
it was an interresting little home built rig!
72zebra 03-18-2002, 12:32 PM www.monsterhighway.com might help. Im talking with a guy now who has some nitrogen shocks. He has 8 and I only want 4. They are 24" travel but you can limit strap them smaller if you need to. Email me at macej@sill.army.mil or ariley1751@aol.com at night. Maybe the 2 of us can make a deal with him
Cliffy [JD] 03-18-2002, 04:00 PM Some company, I think it's KING (and maybe a few more that I don't know of) make a remote resivoir shock. Which may be what you need if you're going to be bouncing a lot with that unsprung weight. Maybe go with the remote resivior shock then a normal coil or leaf spring set-up
