Even if you dont play on the rocks much would a entire axle swap with brake already atached be a better idea. I think you should be able to get a dana 44 with disk brakes(actually not sure what had disk breaks w/ a 44, maybe scout? doubt it?) . if you can find one for $200, it would probably be cheaper or close to the same price as finding all the parts to do the conversion, and you would have a stronger rig.

good luck, or maybe a try a jeep close to the same age with disc front. I know many of the CJ5 s had the dana 30 with discs. I dont know about rotor size or caliper conpatibility, I know the calipers bolt up diff on some, some 6 bolt some 2? , I think the the drum brakes had a diffent snidle shaft diameter, then the jeeps with discs, maybe be a problem or atleast something to check
good luck

His 84 already has front disc brakes unless some fool swapped the original axle out for a pre 77 axle... Maybe the reason you dont know that is you are both NEWBIES:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

What in sams hell is a 84 doing with FRONT DRUMS?????? All '77-'78-up Jeep front brakes should be factory discs.

Anyways, usually all D44's brakes/spindles can be swapped out from the balljoints out. Most all balljoints have the same part#
also common are the axleshaft U-joints, use the spindle assy. and outer shaft stub from a donor vehicle. Check for the size of holes for tie rods, these do vary some from other makes.
