: motor mouns 460 78-79 f250
f-tank 10-12-2005, 09:43 PM heres my deal. i have a 1979 F-250 with a swapped in 460fi. anyways i just replaced the motor mounts due to tearing(rubber) replacing them with urethane mounts from trans-dapt. on the first trip out, in two wheel drive, the bran new mounts tore. my question is, if i swap to solids, besides vibration, is there any other downfall? I also realize i must solid the rear also. i mean when im twisting up my long ass frame, will these mounts cause breakage in my drivetrain elsewhere such as bell hsg or tailshaft? I think my issue could be solved by fixing my rear wheel hop issues. am i correct?
jerryg79 10-13-2005, 08:41 AM I'd check out your other mounts and fix that wheel hop problem before I even thought about solid motor mounts. A Fuel injected 460 shouldnt tear up motor mounts that quick on its own, unless it was a really stout 460.
Mr. Pink 10-13-2005, 10:09 AM THE BIG DESTROYERS OF MOTOR MOUNTS-
1.)wheel hop
2.)torqueing
3.)bad trans/tcase mounts not taking up their share of the stress
4.)solidly mounted drivetrain in a tweaked/ floppy framed truck
5.)poor engine bay area frame rigidity
Solution? Fix wheel hop, perhaps add a box brace between the frame rails up front, keep your rubber mounts, they act like a shock absorber for your drivetrain when things get rough. You'd rather replace torn bushings than cracked bellhousings, trust me. May want to consider some additional frame bracing/cage.
f-tank 10-13-2005, 03:15 PM Thanks all. guess ill locate my wheel hop and go from there. im assuming that its the highboy blocks but not sure. im thinking of adding a add a leaf to eliminate the block and hopefully stop the hop.
f-tank 10-13-2005, 03:20 PM Thank for the imput.i didnt change the trans because it was not broken. it remains rubber. my motor isnt monsterous just healthy with goodies such as cam and rockers. completely de-smogged. not stock. guess my other question is where do i find rubber instead of urethane or should i just run urethane on all mounting points. this is a new problem. the truck was rolling around fine for a year on rubber. i will fix the hop prob also but for now i guess ill keep off the gas.
BigF250on44s 10-13-2005, 06:32 PM thats weird. I never had problems when I had my rubber mounts. I changed over to solid mounts and still didn't have problems. I've since added ladder bars and never had a problem and there is still the blocks in the back(fer now).

they are expensive. Performance unlimited makes a set as well. The design looks better, but you need to cut new notches into your perches. You can also modify 2wd 390 motor mounts so I have been told.
Fordtrucks 10-18-2005, 10:50 AM I use the stock rubbers on my 81 with a 460 and have never ripped one and i love gas.. also i have ladder bars with lifted springs and blocks and the hop goes away with them and without its back also the axel walks forward quite abit.without.

masterbeavis 10-18-2005, 06:42 PM The 80 and up have alot more surface area than the previous years. I run the performance unlimited ones, and they are the ones you have to cut new notches in you engine perches. I like them better design wise than the L&L's, the bolt is centerd in the rubber, but I didnt like havin to do the notching :P
f-tank 10-19-2005, 08:21 PM well i bought the l&l mounts before seeing the post on the performance products. im just going to run these with a limiter strap. i noticed my rear leaves only have four leaves and an overload.Arent F-250s suppose to have more? truck is a junk yard dog so it is possible that they had been switched. dont know if it helps but it is a 1979 F-250 highboy Xtra cab.
Jrod-13 10-19-2005, 10:37 PM one of the easiest solutions I've seen is putting a chain from the drivers side of the motor to the frame.

Im going on 10 years & my 2nd truck on the same mounts from PU...WELL worth the cash...The hole cutting is just an inch forword of the stock hole on 400 towers....Nothing to hard ...
