: Happy B-day to me
Cliffy [JD] 03-16-2002, 02:18 PM I'm pretty stoked, I've been working on my rig all afternoon, and got $100 bucks from the inlaws, and I got a new Air Powered Cut-off wheel dealy (Does that make sense?) that I'll use to trim my fenders for the 35's (instead of a sawsall) and a new 4" Makita grinder. :D:D:D:D:beer:
JoshC 03-16-2002, 02:30 PM Congratulations on the new tools and Happy B-day!
ihman 03-16-2002, 02:54 PM Happy Birdday...:smokin: Have fun with the new tools, I will be using a friends plasma cutter to do the trimming...:flipoff2:

Must be nice, takes a man to use a grinder or sawzall to cut fenders :flipoff2:

Where do aviation snips fit into that? I used my yellow snips to do most of mine.. :D
Happy Birthday, Cliffhanger!
I got some new goodies, too..

http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_16_2002/pic564.JPG
And got the correct U-bolt I needed to finish putting the front end in Little Devil.. at least, the housing..

http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_16_2002/pic569.JPG
Even used the funky U-bolt plates I over-designed... but at least the U-bolts are in the stock grooves and saved myself a few hours of grinding..

Pinion angle is much nicer with the 6deg shims.. might even be "up" a little now. I might be able to leave the grease zerks in the front driveshaft..
Also got the phone and ethernet jacks wired in the shop, and another section of the wall done. :bounce:
Hopefully when I drag the new "Shop computer" outside the jack will actually work.. :D

Noooooo........it takes a man to use a sawzall when grafting one finder into another, needs to be close tolerances or else you've got some serious gap to fill. And I wasn't about to fill sheetmetal gap with my Millermatic 185, especially since even on the lowest feed & power settings I was burining holes in the sheetmetal if I didn't move fast.
:nuke:
Cliffy [JD] 03-16-2002, 05:02 PM The JD2 finally came in...........SWEET!! now you can start on my cage;) J/K
Glad to see your progress. What was the big deal about the u-bolt and should I plan ahead for that when I do my SOA?? since I have NO u-bolts from my 3/4T D44:eek:
Give me the info I need.......:smokin:

easiest thing to do is to just order a new U-bolt kit for a Chevy front axle. I get the Rancho ones (becasue that what the local shop usually carries), nice beafy and shiny (CAD plated) 9/16" bolts.
Order a kit for a '73-'77 (1/2T or 3/4T) kit for a housing with 2-3/4" tubes, and a '78-'86 kit for the 3" tubes.
Makes life simple :D :D
o-ya, happy B-day..... :flipoff2:

No huge deal.. just that the one I originally bought (3.5" by.. 7 5/8"?? or shorter?) would've been long enough if I hadn't used the shim. As it was, the U-bolt only came up halfway into the nuts. I wasn't comfortable with that.
So I bought a longer one, but only 3.25" .. and it fit, problem solved.

:D There's a post in here where I first thunk up the idea..
Two pieces of 1x1x1/8" angle almost make a "C".
Little stubs of 1x1x1/8" square for the "uprights" that the U-bolts sit inside of.
Then some 5" or 6" wide 1/4" plate over the top.
The box is welded to the angle first. Then the angles are set on a spring, the plate is set over the top and the angles and box are then welded to the plate.
Then I chucked it up in the drill and punched out the U-bolt holes..

Springs Over the Axle.
As opposed to the stock configuration where the Springs are Under the Axle (SUA)
