: driveshaft u-joint question
I have an NP205 from an 82 K5 in my CJ. I am also going to run my upgraded stock wide trac axles (D30 & M20)...for now. Right now the front/rear NP205 universals are one p/n, and the D30/M20 universals are another p/n (smaller). Can I purchase a yoke for the D30/M20 so they all use the same universal? if not, can I purchase yokes for the np205 so they all use the same universal (although smaller). If not that, is it possible to make up a driveshaft with different universals on each end? I'm sure I'll need a CV for the rear (plan at the moment is to use a CV front from an XJ).
thanks...

hy_desert_4wheeler 03-17-2002, 03:30 AM Early Dodge trucks with the 205 use small u-joints so you could use the Dodge yokes on the Chevy T-case ..
Was it common for NP205's to have CV driveshafts? How can I tell if mine was setup for it? Since this setup is going into a SWB, I'll need CV shafts...
Maybe i'm just better off going to the j-yard and picking up an NP205 w/driveshafts and having them shortened...
hy_desert_4wheeler 03-17-2002, 09:24 AM The newer Dodge's(80 and up) use a CV for the front.. I do not believe a rear CV was available, however, A front CV flange will fit the rear output allowing the use of a second front D-shaft once it has been cut down to size..The bonus is that they are available with big u-joints( Cummins equipped trucks) or the smaller u-joints 1/2 ton and most 3/4 ton trucks..
I just read the tag off my NP205, its a 1974 model. Fixed yoke front and rear, which I believe uses the 1310 series spicer u-joint.
Anyone know what a 1982 M20 and D30 use for a u-joint series? Can I purchase a yoke for a larger series?
CJ-Jeeper 03-17-2002, 12:36 PM 20's & 30's use the 1310.
20's & 30's use the 1310.
Wow, if that's true..and if my NP205 uses 1310's...I'm golden. I'll call the parts store tomorrow to see the cost of these puppies...now I guess the only other thing is what do I need to do to run a CV rear shaft?
Well here's an update....I checked autozone.com for universals. Looks like I'm in good shape. The ones needed for my 74 Tcase are the same as those for the M20 & D30, as well as for the XJ driveshaft I have out back. Now, as long as I don't need to change the output yoke on the NP205 in the rear...I'm in even better shape....but I have my doubts on that one.
Chark 03-17-2002, 04:03 PM Go to a real parts store. I have seen U joints that use either one size cap on the yoke another on the shaft...even different widths. Good luck.

I have a driveline place that I buy my Spicer units from. On a sunday evening, the best I could do for doing research was autozone. They may suck for somethings, but having an online catalog helps out occasionally.

What's the difference between a double cardin and a CV in terms of driveshafts? After looking over the XJ shaft I have, and talking with others on ICQ, it seems as though I have a double cardin...and appears to be able to bolt up to my NP205 output. I will confirm that tomorrow.
BillyBob535 03-18-2002, 06:37 AM If you are referring to FleetPride/U-Joint sales I believe they get about $12 for the 1310. I just had mine replaced but I can't find the reciet to verify it.

I email you. yes, I was refering to Fleets Pride. Drop me a line sometime. The more fellow Jeepers I meet, the better!

CJ-Jeeper 03-18-2002, 06:57 PM The terms double cardan & CV are commonly used interchangeably, though there may technically be a difference.
Tom Woods has a lot of good info on his site you should check out.

Compared the XJ shaft with the NP205 rear output yoke. Correct u-joint (1310 series), but wrong flange. Time to checkout some spicer books/pages to see if a flange exists that will work for me.
Ideas?

IIRC, a double cardin joint does not maintain constant velocity throughout the angle range of the joint through each revolution. It speeds up and slows down slightly during each revolution.
That said, just about everyone calls Double Cardin style driveshafts, CV driveshafts.
Yes, my XJ shaft is a CV as it has the pivot ball in the center.
