View Full Version : 5.0 In My Scout II

Let's just say I have an extra '94 Mustang Mass Air 5.0 layin' around, and I'm tired of trippin' over the '96 ZF S547 in the middle of my garage, and I already lined up an Atlas 4.3 with a passenger drop at a great price. Now, with all this talk of crawling ratios and someone in KC getting ready for a winter build, I was just wondering if it would be possible to stuff a 3:1 203 range box in between this mess? What would the final drive ratio be and what possible combos would I be able to conjure up? Toss in 36" / 37" tires and possibly 4:56 rears, (have 4:10's now). Yeah, it's been done, but I ain't done it, yet. Thanks! :smokin:
P.S. May be a chance that this Scout will be dual purpose, (street / trail), but trailering is an option. Although, half the fun is getting there. :cool2:

Is he any better at spotting than he was at world domination? :grinpimp:
Can't beat that German engineering anyway. :smokin:

The problem with a doubler in a Scout II is they really don’t fit. That rear case is up in the floorboard area where there is no room for a t-case. That is if you want to keep the flat profile under the frame.
A 203 on its side is approximately 10 ¾” tall. Since my rig already has a 2" body lift and I am not afraid to clearance the tunnel, mine fits flat when the cases are clocked.
The reason I went thru alot of work to keep it flat is I have a full length skid plate that I really love. It works great on those big rocks. No hangups at all.:)
You were not bidding on a set of door inserts the other day was you? If so, Sorry you lost! :flipoff2:

Yeah, that was me. Had a few snipers at the end of the auction and the tin can & wire phone system around here is no match for the T-1's and Sat connections out there. I'm sure another set will come down the pike again. :smokin:

Alright, but first I want to thank you guys. If I don't learn how to do the calcs myself, then how else will I learn? I took the axle ratio, 4:56, times the 1st gear, 5.72 to 1, then times the lowest possible Atlas low range gear, 4.3, and came up with 112.746. That ain't too bad of a crawl range. Now lets throw in a Klune into the mix and.............. :cool2:

Yep, It was I that got them. :grinpimp:
Funny thing is I told the guy how to ship them to me. He charged me $40.00 to ship them and later it cost him $123.00 to ship UPS!!! I told him to ship via Greyhound. I just had fiberglass fenders shipped from Kentrol ($75.00) and 3 days from Indiana and steel front fenders from Denver($65.00) in 1 day.

Good deal! At least next time I won't have to worry about getting sniped by you when another set shows up. Take pics with them installed. Enjoy!

That would be cool! Did I ever tell you that I graduated Jackson Memorial H.S. in '81? How's the women around there? Still tough as nails with funny accents? Gawd, I don't miss that place! :smokin: Something about a fair haired cowgirl with her own Powerstroke that does it for me. :grinpimp:

Yeah, that's right. Well, that Scout from eBay is the one I want to put the 5.0 / ZF-5S47 / 4.3 Atlas from my Early Bronco project into. I have a fuel injected 345 / 700R4 / 300 in my '77 Scout II project that just seems to make sense for that application, and there ain't no way I'm cutting up my stock '65 Scout 80, (at least not this year). I'm trying to find motor mounts to weld in between the frame rails, then try to sell the 304 / 727 / 20 combo. Might try BB or eBay for that task, (doubt I get anything for it), and I'd hate to store it when someone could be installing it into their rig to wheel next spring. Get the word out, I'll take $500 for the whole shooting match. :smokin:
