Yeah, I know it sounds stupid but,

How much variation is there between different ring gear ratio's??
I am about to shave the bottom of my 9" and want to get it as close as possible, but don't want to screw myself if I go to a different ratio later on.

I'ts not called a nine inch for nothing. Gear ratios change the number of teeth and the thickness of the ring and pinion but never the diameter, still 9inches.

I don't know about the 9" but I have seen other gearsets increase and decrease some in diameter, as the ratios change..
