I have a 91 ranger with what i thought was the 4.0 engine which i thought had the dana 35 axle, but i was working on the ball joints and they didnt fit, so i called the parts shop and it sounds like the ball joints for the 28 are the right size...
So,
Is there an easy way to tell which engine I have? Or could it be a different axle all together? I am not the first or second owner and there are two inch spacers under the rear...
Thanks.

If its a D28, a previous owner swapped it in and took the 35. All '91 trucks came with a D35, regardless of engine.
A D35 has 10 bolts on the front "cover", a D28 has 12 bolts.
2" spacers being 2" blocks? Those are factory.
4.0L trucks will have "X" as the 8th digit on the VIN #. 2.9s are "T".
Thanks for the info,
went to get other ball joints today and found out that they had given me the wrong parts to start :mad3:
2" blocks are factory? I have looked at other rangers and havent seen them...

all the different year rangers i have owned had the block in the rear its how ford made up the difference between 4x4 and 2x4. also the intake usualy has a big 2.9 or 4.0 cast into it.
