What do you mean "good or bad"?

Are they bent, broken, etc? If so, yeah, they're bad. :flipoff2:

depends on what you plan to do with it, and how heavy you go-go juice foot is.:flipoff2:

What is your question exactly? Are you talking about strength, or overall condition?

what i mean is i have heard of some axles being different than normal.
like smaller axkes , lower spline count , or thinner wall axle tubes.

You mean you don't know? Did you look at them? Did you get teh BOM # off the tubes and look them up?

I have a rear 44 I'm putting under my Scout 80 to replace a D27. It's going to be "pushed and abused" with light offroading by a 152 ci 4-cylinder so for me it's "good". It's going to be hard to destroy.

For most on this board a 44 is gonna be a minimum-strenghted axle (in my honest opinion/guess) or else it'll quickly: :nuke: Like someone else already mentioned it all depends on how hard you plan to use it.

If they are in fact Dana 44's (in '71 some models had Dana 30 front ends) they are as strong as any other 44 EXCEPT they use Dana 30 outter stubs. If you want to upgrade, just use everything from the knuckle out off of a full size Chevy, Ford, Dodge, ect and you can have the option of aftermarket "high-steer" components. This will give you the "normal" size outter stub shaft, stronger wheel bearing hubs and a stronger locking hub design (if you go with the internally splined hubs). Do some research! There is alot available for those axles but I would check "BOM" numbers or compare diff covers to make sure you have what you think you have.

Stock axles in a '71 Scout II are:

Dana 30 front, Drum Brakes.
Dana 44 Rear, Drum Brakes.

The front is 27-spline inners, 28-spline outers (or is it the other way around, memorys little foggy)
Rear is 30-spline, flanged (not tapered)

A front D44 is stronger, a D30 I would say is good up to about 32" tires and moderate wheeling (on a heavy Scout).

As mentioned, it is dependant on your intended use, tire size and powerplant. IF they are 44s' which is not probable if they are stock, and you keep under 35" tires and have a light right foot you "could" keep a dana 44 alive.

It really is a function of the driver. i have seen guys break 60s often and guys with 44 who never seem to have a problem, even with similar tires and engines.

You could order an early scout II(71-73) with a dana 44f.It is still drum brakes and I don't know if it uses 297x or if it uses 260x.I really don't know crap about them but I had one in a 72 and it was printed on the line set ticket along with a few other weird things like factory electronic ignition and a block heater.I have also seen a few other one's in JYs.
Chances are it's a dana 30f and if I were you i'd look for some later model axles like 75-80.

Thanks for the input on these axles.

And noo i hav not had a chance to take a good look at them yet.

this i do know on the front it is a pass drop, spring under, about 31-32" spring center, with about 59"+- wms to wms, looks to be a 44 or a 41 cast into the housing, and it is disk brake.

the rear is drum, 59.5" WMS-WMS.

If its disc brake, good chance its its a D44, the "44" cast in the diff is a better give away.

The D30 cover is sort of round, the D44 is more flat on the sides. But the easiest way to tell it to look at the passenger (cast in) spring perch. The D44 uses 2 different size u-bolts, with one being up on the diff housing. The d30 uses 2 u-bolts the same size and are closer to the diameter of the tubes.

yep 2 diff u bolts on housing.

depending how you use them if you put them under a yj you will have to grind the inner c's off and rotate your caster. i put a set under a yj, rotated the pinion angle and my caster was shot.i think scouts come with 0 caster.
