What do you guys run and recommend? I have lots of linkage parts (from my CJ7 and the K5 the 350/sm465 came from), including a YJ master setup from the YJ tub I'm swapped on. Trying to get a plan together...

I run a Jeep slave and master on the stock Chevy bellhousing mount.

Simple to install and works great.

I run a stock jeep master and a stock jeep slave on my AA bellhousing works great. When i ran the sb 327 I used a 1964 bellhousing from a pickup that had the stock chevy slave cylinder, the only thing is that I do not know if it will mate up to sm465 I used a sm420 and still do.

No question about it. Use the hydraulic set-up. No linkage to wear or bind, virtually trouble-free.
A friend used a 4.3L/sm465/208 on his flattie, never had troubles with it. Another friend used a 350/sm465/205 in his Nissan Patrol, used the OEM nissan clutch M/C, OEM Chevy slave unit, had a local shop make a line to connect the two, and has of yet not had any probs.

I just installed a 4.3L V-6 and SM465 into my 62 CJ5. I used a older Chevy bell housing that had no hydraulic clutch. I plan on going with a hydraulic set up. What is the best way to mount the slave for the clutch arm on the bell housing. If there are pictures of peoples set ups, I would appreciate seeing them.

You guys all using an external slave? What year came ith externals? The Master donor was an 89, which had an internal slave.

thanks,
Chris

don't use the internal. Get an external slave.... when the internal starts to leak, and it will, you have to drop the tranny to replace it. And it's pricey.

I didnt have a slave bracket on my BH either when I swapped in my 420. Now mine was somewhat different since I have a shorter clutch fork so I couldnt mount a pusher. So I went puller. Looks like this.

Partsmike sells a bracket to use a standard mechanical linkage bellhousing and a Jeep slave, AA sells a bracket that uses a Toyota slave or something. The PM bracket was like $45. I have pics of both:

Mike - Nice job on the mount.! Gives me some ideas on redoing my mount. I also use a puller, but on a SM465 and have too much deflection in the mount.

Thanks :D Yeah, you can see in the pic the previous mount, which well.. bent quite a bit. The new mount is 100% solid and hasnt bent at all :)

Mike,

Where'd you get that slave cylinder from? Summit Racing sells an appealing HoweRacing Puller for $45. I was thinking of procuring one of those. Comments?

I got it from summit. Its a wilwood slave part # 260-1333 Summit has them at about $55 but they're completely rebuildable. Dont know about howes. If you go with a wilwood you want a master with a 3/8" bore.

Anyone know what an 89 stock YJ clutch master cylinder bore size is, or where I could find out?

Well I called AA tonight to try to find some information out, and all the dude wanted to do was sell me their parts. I don't mind that, cause that's what his job is, a sale person...but I called looking for detailed information.

Bottom line according to AA is. If using a stock Clutch Master Cylinder, you need to procure the following...

1 Slave Bracket (PN 716287 - $30.74)
1 Slave Cylinder - Pusher Type (PN 716213 - $68.30)
1 Fitting (PN 716215 - $8.54)
1 Hose (PN 716130H - $44.40)
1 Fitting (PN 716130 - $17.08)

The prices listed are AA retail prices. They total $169.06 + shipping or +shipping/tax if you buy from a distributor within your state.

To me, this seems a bit costly. I can make a bracket, I believe I can re-use my hose (you all haven't said you changed hoses), fittings I can buy locally (and gotta cost less). All I need is the correct slave cylinder.

I guess what I really need to know is what bore size is the Clutch Master Cylinder for an 89 YJ 2.5L (AX-5 trans)....so I can procure the correct Slave unit.

Mike replied back saying I'd need a master with 3/8" bore size, and the one from HoweRacing says I'd need a master with 3/4" bore size.

Can you guys give a little more detail on your setups? Like what parts you used and by who, what year your scavenged parts came from, pushers vs. pullers, etc?

I don't know part numbers, but I am using a stock CJ hydro master (Iron Duke 4 Cyl setup) and a puller type slave from CNC. It look identical to the wilwood one.. rebuildable. I used steel braded line from the master to the slave with AN fittings. Seems to work well so far.

But I've got to rebuild the mount as my current one moves too much. I only went with a puller because the header collector didn't allow for a push type slave.

My bad it is indeed 3/4. I dont know what I was thinking, sorry about the confusion. Since I didnt have swing pedals with mine origionally and had through the floor cable clutch everything needed to be replaced. I purchased a wilwood pedal, master cylinder (3/4") and slave from summit for less than the previously quoted AA price. It was also significantly cheaper than the quoted prices for stock CJ master and slave from the local auto parts place. Go figure.

I don't know what year the bellhousing is but it is one of the latter ones because it has the slave braket on it. I'm pretty sure if you nab one from a late model truck or blazer you should be set.

The master and slave I use are '85 XJ parts but I am almost sure they are the same for any YJ/XJ/TJ/MJ with the external slave on the trans.
