: SM465 change tail shaft to 4X4
What would be involed in changing a 2 wheel drive SM465 to the 4X4 output shaft? I'm not concerned about the mechanical ability, just what would be needed to do it. Are there any case differences? Who has the 10 spline shafts? This is in a 1976 Chev truck. HUGE cast iron housing with inspection cover on lower right side, top shifter. Does the SM465 have the gear howl like the SM420?
Thanks,
David:usa:
ranger 03-17-2002, 09:55 AM It would be easier and cheaper to get a 4X 465. :skull:

I agree, I paid $75 for mine and it was cleaned and painted and came with the bellhousing.
Also I belive all 465's have two pto covers and they are a bit quieter then a 420.

You would need a 4WD output shaft - otherwise they are the same tranny. As others have said, though, much simpler to find the 4 wd version - which you would have to do to get the output shaft
boondocker 03-18-2002, 09:40 PM I should have read this posting sooner. I just bought a SM465/2WD yesterday with the intention of putting it on my FJ40.
Of course, I can not return it anymore. So, I'm stuck and have to put a 4WD output shaft. How much work involved and cost are we looking at?
    :( :( :mad2: :mad2:
KrustyKruiser 03-18-2002, 09:44 PM If you are putting it in front of a 4 speed tcase AA makes an adapter - it's the same adapter they make for the 4wd version except the spud shaft is diferent (you also have to cut the output shaft down - no biggie) So it may not be a loss - just depends what you were gonna do with it.
I found a company that sells transmission parts. They have one for this 1976 for $80. It is www.txchange.com they are in Portland, OR.

boondocker 03-19-2002, 09:47 PM OK I'll keep the SM465/2WD.
Did anyone heard of the NEW Adapter that AA is building to go between the stock toyota tranny (3 or 4) and stock transfer case.
This is suppose to lower the ratio significantly.
I also understand that they are building a similar Adapter that can be used with SM420 and SM465 coupled to the stock 3 or 4 spd transfer case.
Hopefully, I can use my SM465 with this new adapter.
:)
boondocker 03-20-2002, 08:34 PM To all of you out there who has a SM465/2WD tranny, don't despair.
Talk to Advance Adapter this morning and also did a little research.
Yes you can use the 2WD version on the FJ40 by buying the AA t/c adapter. There is also a different AA t/c adapter for the 4WD version.
Furthermore, AA is building a rockbox which will adapt the SM465 (2WD or 4WD) to the FJ40 t/c. This is suppose to provide an ultra low gear.
I'll keep every posted.;) ;) ;) :p :p ;) :)
Land Crusher 03-20-2002, 09:21 PM OK might be wrong on this but
Isnt ther a company that sells a shaft for the
465 that makes it posible to use the plate
adapter like the sm420 use.
a company out of texas maybe???
I cant be nuts im shure ive heard of this
maybe I should do a search.
if ther is I beleve it would be much cheeper
than buying anything from AA.

You are part right - there is a company in CO (Classic Cruisers?)that makes a plate adapter for the 10 spline 465 - but you have to buy a special and expensive custom made input gear from them also. The overall cost is pretty much the same as the AA adapter.
FWIW, the only difference between the 2wd and 4wd AA adapters is the spud shaft - one is the 10 spline for the 4wd tranny and the other is 32?spline for the 2wd.
I have seen a plate adapter for about 170 bucks that uses the 4X4 SM465. Since I run a chev V8 anyway, the input shaft should be OK. I like the plate adapter to try to keep the OA length of the trans/transfer as short as possible and the AA kit is 5 1/2 inches long.
Land Crusher 03-21-2002, 03:42 PM thanks for setting me straight.
I defenately would rercomend the plate adapter
over the aa adfapter as nit is shorter
and I have seen the aa adapter crack.
but have never seen a plate adapter break.
KrustyKruiser 03-21-2002, 04:46 PM Yoda - so you dont need any special input gear for the 465? Just a plate and bolt the 3 speed input ghear on just like you do with the 420 plate adapters? Neat. Had not heard of that.
The SM465 is GM, so it would fit right up to my 327 with its bellhousing. I think the plate adapter only works with the 3 speed transfer case because of the 10 spline. Maybe if you are using the Toyota engine it needs a different input.
But since things are rapidly changing at work, I won't be doing this anytime soon:(

birfields 03-21-2002, 10:35 PM I have the 2wd sm465 adapted the the dana/spice 18 on my cruiser. works really well and the Tcase is easier to find than a cruiser Tcase.68:1 with 4.10s. 86:1 with 5.29s. metric on one end of the driveline and standard on the other end kinda sucks though.oh well
There is a plate adapter for sale on the classified page with a picture!

That would be mine.:) All you need is a 4wd 465. Then the output shaft needs drilled and tapped to retain the stock t/c gear. Yes, it slides right on. If a person has their shaft out, send it to me and I could do the drill/ tap for a small fee. It would be cost prohibitive to send the whole tranny.
KrustyKruiser 03-22-2002, 10:57 AM Jay - do you make those adapters yourself? Or are they commercially made (and by whom)? Thanks, Andy
Jeepdude_Jay 03-22-2002, 11:09 AM Yes, I made them. A friend wanted to do this conversion so I told him I could make the adapter. Just made a few extras while I was at it.

MetalMender 03-22-2002, 01:33 PM Here is another pic of a 465 adapter not installed.
This is one that I made 4 years ago,it sure is nice to be able to build your own stuff :D
