I was wondering what the differenc in the width between an '84 waggy 44 front and the stock tj 30 I am going to be building this 44 and also wanted to know if anyone has any tips or good ideas for me in this swap. Thanks.

If I remember correctly the Wagoneer is 60.5" and the TJ is 61"? Only half an inch and is un noticable. Some Wagoneers had narrower axles and some had wider (63").

When I took a tape to it, it was roughly within an inch of oneanother. The 44 has some sort of vacume hose on it and has a different diff cover on it. I think it was for the auto hubs on it. Is that going to be a problem to change over to normal hubs?

DO NOT get an 83-84 waggy front 44.

they are vacuum activated and very nasty. any other year of waggy (to my knowledge) will give you a hub-able 44. try for a command trac (PT4WD) front axle. those should already have warn hubs.

if you've already gotten it, try an sell it to some dumbass on JU

I already have it. Can it be changed to have normal hubs, and just change the diff cover to a normal one also or is there more to do to make it to locking hubs.

I think these had a central axle disconect similar to the YJ's do. Someone else will know for sure. If that the case you will need the axle shafts and hubs off of a non disconect front end

so I just cant change the hubs and call it good?

If you already have it, can't you just measure it?

The Waggy fronts are 62" WMS to WMS, whic is a little wider than your TJ.

Yours has a center vacuum disco, which as you noted is located in the centersection (NOT the long tube like a YJ). For those looking, the diaphragm is visible coming out of the diff cover. This disco was on some 83s and 84s.

You can put hublocks on, but you still have the center disco.

I would follow the previous advice and sell it (I know...I know ...its a PITA), and find one from any other Wag or GW except those 83 and 84s.

can you swap the long side shaft (the one with the disco) with a one piece unit from a earlier or later year? just curious.

No. These had the disconnect integrated into the same housing as the pumpkin, not outboard in the middle of the long shaft like a YJ or XJ.

You need a Waggy from '87 to 91 to be certain that you get on with a drivers-side differential but without the disco.

Nope. 80-82 and 85-91 Wags/GWs had the driver's side pumpkin without the disco.

How about this, block the disconnect mechanism so that it's locked all the time and replace the slugs with hubs. Not the best solution, but might be worth it since you already have it.

Does anyone else think that will work or is it not worth it. Also I can't figure out how to put someone elses reply on my reply can someone tell me how to do that because I am Really STUPID I GUESS

Im doing my Waggy swap right now you can get theese axles in TX for like $100 just go get one without vacume disco on it.Its so much easyer, Dont try to do it with the vacume waggy axle it probably wont work right..

Charly's right. I was thinking 44s at BOTH ends and no center disco... I just remembered that '87-'91 were the years I was looking for when I swapped my swap front and rear. (BTW-super easy swap for a YJ)

what are you doing for the coils and lca/uca mounts? are you cutting and pasting? did you drop the $ for the rubicon kit? I want to swap a waggy 4 front on my MJ but don't feel like droping $250 for the rubicon stuff.

would I be able to pick up a set of EB coil mounts and weld them onto the waggy tubes?

Drunk Guy

I was going to cut the old ones off and put them on the 44 but the one on the d30 diff is part of the diff so I was going to make one up or by the kit for it. Not sure yet but now I have to find a new 44 because this one SUCKS

if you get a chance, take a CLOSE look at the EB coil mounts...you'll snag an extra 2 inches of lift if you can get them to work.
