I went with a friend to look at an EB he is considering buying today. The EB had the first set of outboard buggies I've seen.

Check 'em out!

The springs are 11 leaf, 3.5" Nationals. The front of the spring uses the stock mount. The "buggie" is mounted on a bracket that is welded to the frame where the stock bump stop was.

Conclusion- way too much body lean:eek: :eek: I'm sure it's a flex monster off road but it's scarry on the street. I think if the buggie was "pinned" it might help with the body roll.

Anyway- I just thought you guys and gals might like to see something fresh in the way of suspension ideas.

I have yet to figure out in my mind what good the axle dropping away does. I only beleive that a certain amount of drop away is of any value and the ability for the axle to stuff upwards is the most beneficial.

Nick- I agree with you. People will say it keeps the wheel on the ground but with no weight on it, what good is it?

Beside's it handles like a scalded dog on the street.

BTW- this EB is up your way. The guy lives in Shingle Springs.

THat looks like a pretty sweet setup. You guys are right in that it is not the absolute best way to do things but there are a lot of plusses. Think about it this way, if the axle can fall away and keep contact with the ground. You are alleviating a good 4-600# from the rear of the truck(depending on axle and tire size etc). I'm not saying gobs of uncontrolled droop is any good at all, but a little bit can be pretty helpful.

That is a fat setup for sure.

I think tons of movement is sweet when you have coil overs as there is always weight on the axles. Without it, perhaps with double shocks it's decent, if they are tightened all the way down. Which would such for all other occassions.

i bet that if you added another leaf or two to that setup it would be the shit.

That was my thought exactly. The Nationals are really soft and were never meant to handle the increased body roll you get with 5-6" of lift.

I think the advantage of droop is more as a counter weight than providing traction. Kinda like having your momma standing on your bumper.

Compression is much more beneficial, as that's what keeps you level.

That's appears to be a fairly simple mod. With some fine tunning, it might work really well. I've never run a buggy leaf, so I can't say if I like them or not. I'm sure it's a ramp queen though!

I am pretty sure Brian Holbrook built that buggy leaf. He did a few bronco buggy leafs that way. It flexes great but the rear axle walks under the truck like crazy. I don't like any type of buggy leaf, these aren't any worse or any better, but if you want more flex inboard the springs instead. That way you gain flex it still is scarier on the street, but the rearend doesn't walk under the vehicle.

What would you rather have? Loss of stability from inboarding the springs or a little bit of spring walk. Not much of the wheeling I do is on flat ground, I know what I'd choose.

Could you put a track-bar on the rear to keep it from walking, and still keep the good flex?

The wlaking under I was refering to was the axle moving down and forward when you are trying to climb a ledge or something. A center limiting strap is a good bandaid for this. I am not sure about the side to side stability with 3/4 eliptics, I haven't seen many people run them with a track bar, but if that was a problem a track bar would fix it.

How was that bronco? Was it worth the money he was asking? Did you buddy end up buying it? I am going to look at buying an EB pretty soon and I had noticed that one for sale for a while, but had never gotten up the road to look at it. Not in too big of a hurry to buy until the CJ sells.

No, my buddy passed on it. Since you asked, IMO, it was over-priced at $12,500.00. It has a very solid drivetrain with a lot of potential. But for that kind of $$, I expected a much cleaner rig. Again, just my .02 :)
