View Full Version : Best FAN choice
I am running the "stock" fan. I have some different styles and was looking for information on what is the best "stock" fan to use. When I say stock, I mean a bolt on fan vs an electric fan. clutch vs no clutch should also be considered. Here are two of the different style I have. The 77 one has curved tips too.

I have an aluminum flex fan with spacer / no shroud, and a pusher electric behind the grill. :smokin:

Never idled long in the summer, but if the temps run up to 190*, a flick of a switch keeps it steady on the trail. My engine swap will run two electric fans, on two speed puller and the pusher. :smokin:

I have an Mark Viii electric fan sitting behind my 1979 Full size Bronco radiator pushed forward about 1/2 inch in front of the stock 304 in my scout. Its a 2 speed fan - but can draw 33 amps on high. It does move a lot of air.

Yes, they both use the same fan clutches and fans. As far as I know IH used only an 18" diameter fan and I believe GM used some 19", and they won't clear the fan shroud, so if you're getting a fan from a GM make sure and measure it.
The only potential problem with the clutches is that when using the severe duty clutch, make sure you have enough clearance at the radiator. The severe duty clutch is about 1/2 - 3/4 inch taller than the standard duty and probably won't clear a four row radiator. It might be iffy with a three row.
Thanks for all the input, I might look for a fan without a clutch (Finger chopper  ) As this would give me more room between the fan and radiator.
