Anyone got any ideas on lifting a 96 Explorer, Ive done some looking around and can only find a 4in lift kit for it. What are some otherthings i need to concider when lifting it? Any advise would be great.

you can lift it 2" for ~$40 by cranking the front torsion bars and getting add a leafs for the back. go to http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/ and do a search for torsion bars and aal. theres a bunch of stuff written up about how to do it. thats one option, if you have a 2wd you might be able to get lift spindles for the front. the best thing is to go on that forum and read up theres a lot of good info there.

Superlift has a 4" kit for it, but there's not a whole lot else. '98+ Ranger kits will work up front perhaps with some slight mods, although that doesn't open up very many more options either.

If you seriously want to wheel it, I'd swap the IFS for a straightaxle on it. There should be plenty of info on this as well at the link punkbek posted. The rear axle is good & strong, so you'd have no worries there.

I wouldn't suggest cranking the torsion bars like punk said, it will just cause more problems in the long run, parts will wear out much faster and your ride will go to hell.

i got 3 words for you Solid Axle Swap, it will make your life much easier in the end, torsion bars are really nice, but even with the 4 inch superlift, they are going to be hanging down and severly decreasing your ground clearance. just my opinion, but if that is too much for you then im sure any mainstream lift will be nice.

i only suggested the torsion bar lift cause its less than 4" and way cheaper. it wont wear stuff out that much faster, plus if youre wheeling it its going to wear out fast anyways. unless you want to put another 2 grand in your truck (assuming someone else does all the work) a solid axle swap probably isnt for you. (and i think if you lift it more than 4 inches you have to get a longer rear driveshaft but im not sure) you might need longer brake lines for a bigger lift too.

not that life is misserable without one...but youd be much more satisfied if you went with the solid axle regardless the lift. As for explorer lifts i know someone who was pretty happy with a 4...i wouldnt know otherwise tho
