: Move the Steering box forward
dfelice 10-20-2005, 06:02 PM I have high steer on my D44 front with a shackle reversal. The bolt through the rod end on my drag link already hits my tie rod. I had to move it to the top of the pitman arm to temporarily fix that. I would like to move my steering box forward on the frame so I can move the front axle forward a couple more inches. Have any of you done this? Any info or pictures. Thanks for any help or advice.
I moved my front forward 3 inches, and left the steering box in the same spot. If you use a set of "ER" double arms and put the tie rod in the back the drag link and tie rod will not bind.
Cush00 10-20-2005, 07:16 PM All right, It's been covered here many times. There is a little button up at the top of the page, it says SEARCH you may want to check that out or post this in the newbie section. Or you can just hang on to your butt, because I wouldn't want to be on the tail end of what you are going to get if you leave that question in this forum.
dfelice 10-20-2005, 07:33 PM sorry man, I searched, I didn't find it. send me a link and I'll delete this.
dfelice 10-20-2005, 07:36 PM Thanks for the suggestion CJ, If I didn't have the high steer already I would consider it. I think at this point I would rather move the box and fab a new mount. I'm just looking for some examples of that.
Cush00 10-20-2005, 07:41 PM Here's what I did. I moved just rotated the box on the upper rear hole. You have to cut the front tube "crossmember" out though. Made a new plate outta 3/8 and made all new spacers to make the box sit straight. Welded that to the inside of the framerail, put a gusset from the bottom of the plate to the bottom of the framerail and called it good. It shouldn't see to much stress as I am also going ram assist.
dfelice 10-20-2005, 07:46 PM thanks,
resqme 10-20-2005, 08:48 PM What rig is it? If it is a CJ, MORE makes a mount (around $100), that is as good as anything you could fab. I fabbed my own for my CJ before MORE's was available. Wasn't too hard, had to cut a section of the front cross member and box it in to fit the steering lines. I moved it forward 1 1/4 inch to allow a waggy pitman and 1 ton chevy tie rod ends.
dfelice 10-21-2005, 04:30 AM sorry, It's a YJ. Thanks for the help.
dfelice 10-21-2005, 04:31 AM why a waggy pitman arm?
microtus 10-21-2005, 05:20 AM sorry man, I searched, I didn't find it. send me a link and I'll delete this.

steering +box and a few others otta get you plenty of information.
Its O'dark 30 in the morning and my commute begins so I linked a couple for starters.
JEEPRZ 10-21-2005, 06:16 AM If you have a u-jointed steering shaft you can play with the angle the box sits at and get some more clearance.
I made a new mount for my CJ, and cut the stock crossmember out. This also allowed me to drop the 8274 down between the frame rails.
Unbolt the box from the frame, leaving everything else hooked up, and move it into the position you need so everything clears. Then start some sparks
D'sYJ 10-21-2005, 09:08 AM This thread has some good pics of what i did on my YJ when I had the exact same problem as you have now. Since those pics I have swapped to a waggy pitman arm to get full lock to lock turning and new Sky Manufacturing drag link and tie rod.

resqme 10-21-2005, 09:58 AM Like Jeeprz said, with a waggy arm (3/4" longer), you get full lock steering, even on a wider than stock front end. Ya gotta be careful though...when you add the longer arm, you increase force on steering box, mounts, tie-rods, etc.
jchio 10-21-2005, 10:00 AM Move your Tierod behind the axle, much easier. Just buy a pair of steering arms :D

and flip your calipers to clear the arms.... then try and bleed a caliper that is mounted upside down..... or atleast that's what it was with my Waggy D44
