Hello all. I am on my first Cruiser project and am in the process of compiling the components I need to get the thing put back together and on the road. It is not a creampuff all-original restoration, just a fun new hobby with a mishmash of parts.

It's a 1982 BJ42 with a 'B' diesel from an 80' (I think) , an H55F 5-speed and a 3-speed split T/C. The 'B' is ready to go in and I'll run that until I find a 3B to replace it with, however the H55F pops out of 5th gear when you let off the accelerator and the T/C needs seals and bearings.

I have found a 4-speed tranny on a 3-speed T/C that came out of an 81' Cruiser for $600CDN and want to buy it for replacement instead of tearing the others apart. I don't know if the 4-spd/TC is from an FJ or BJ and am wondering if it makes a difference. Will the 4 spd bolt right up to the 'B'? Will I need to have my driveshaft lengths changed or is it a straight forward procedure?

Any advice is appreciated.
Cheers, Kyle

if the current 5 spd trans pops out of 5th gear during deceleration, then i'd venture to guess that it's due to one of the following parts issues:
bad synchro ring
worn shift fork
chipped tooth on the 5th gear (main or counter)

either of these should be easy to fix and cost a lot less than trying to buy another transmission and convert it in there. and re-sealing the t-case while you're at it will pay dividends down the road cause it'll last a long time. make sure to replace the center shaft and roller bearings in the t-case along with the seals. they're the first parts to wear out and can cause a complete t-case failure when they do go bad.

Ummm, you could just leave the H55F in 4th. That way it would work just like the 4sp, but you wouldn't have to do any work or buy anything. :flipoff2:
