: Larger Fuel Tanks
DanTheMan 10-21-2005, 12:32 PM Anybody out there have a larger than stock fuel tank in the stock location of their truck? I'd like to find something bigger than the 26 gallon that i currently have. Something like 50-60 gallons. For those of you with them, how do you like 'em, where'd you get it?
For folks that have a tank in your bed, how big are they, where'd you get them?
Just looking for options and prices right now. :grinpimp:
TIA
packnrat 10-21-2005, 12:44 PM look into the rv web sites.
the fifth wheel style will be bed rail high, and can hold 50 gallons of gasoline.
indulf 10-21-2005, 12:44 PM you can get contractor tanks from northern tool. last i checked a 55g l-shped tank (fits under/behind your toolbox) ran $449. alum treadplate.
check northern's site, they have a bunch of options for in-bed tanks.
cant help on a tank that mounts in your stock location...

They're in Chico, California and they make, sell and install both oversize replacement and in-bed tanks.
4x4not 10-21-2005, 04:19 PM It would be nice to have a 56 gallon tank in my Dodge, but $900! Wowsers.
freds40 10-21-2005, 09:18 PM I bought my truck with an oversized stock saddle tank (56 gal.) and an in bed 98 gal tank. They are transfer flow and are awesome. I filled before towing up to the 'Con drove around for 5 or 6 weeks after the trip and filled when I had about 25 gals. left. It hurts when I fill but it's about once every 2 months so it's not too bad. Filling @ the truck pumps takes about 5-10 mins. from maybe 10 gals. so it's not too bad. I'd hate to fill @ a regular station though.
MR4WD 10-21-2005, 09:35 PM I wouldn't mind having a tank about 4 times the size of my current tank, as long as it didn't take up all 6.5' of bed space I have, and cost under $5000. I have a shorty crossbed toolbox that would work well with a big tank, but I think once i go stacks I'd have to sacrifice even MORE bedspace. I know I'd enjoy the novelty of being able to drive 20 hours non stop and filling up prior to another hurricane in the gulf when speculation alone drives diesel prices up...
Has anybody ever encountered bad fuel, or algae or anything? Or do you just add the bug killer stuff and hope for the best? Because I mean at 2-300 in diesel, the shit better be good (not that I've ever had bad fuel, but I've heard of it!!!)
Jrod-13 10-22-2005, 01:42 AM I know for fords you can get a 38 gallon tank to replace the stock rear 19 gallon, but I don't know of any larger side tanks.
packnrat 10-24-2005, 04:41 PM for the ford diesel there is/was a factory option 50 gallon "stock" tank.
better to have two 30 gallons tanks one on each side of the truck.
there is a lot of weight in 30 gallons of fuel.
CanuckJeeper 10-25-2005, 05:44 AM I just installed a 100-gallon bed mounted, it takes about 24" of bed space (48 x 24 x apx 30"), with a transfer pump (you have to pump the fuel - not direct transfer). Tank is no-frills, all white, 2" pipe for a transfer pump, and the fill neck is on the right side (I guess I could prob. turn it around). The tank was 320$ at Tractor Supply (in stock, no less), the dang pump was 200$...

oldjeep 10-25-2005, 05:59 AM Maybe try these guys for a more custom fit aux tank. They sell a lot of stuff on ebay too, just bought one of their tanks for my 53 F350. List was $514, got it for $79 :)

87yota 10-28-2005, 04:25 AM I have a 120 gal. L-tank in the bed of my 93 cummins. I like it because my tool box fits over the top of it. It dosn't interfere with my fifth wheel either. I built it myself. It sticks up above my bedrails about 5". Grainger sells 110 gal. L-tanks for $410, but you you have to use your companys account number and pay with cash.

Grainger sells to anyone here in AL. They *used* to be dicks about selling to anybody except other companies, but apparently that's changed in the last year or so.
I get the 10% discount due to my company. I'll call them up for myself or another 4x4 club member, have the item put it "on call", the member goes by picks it up and pays with whatever (cash, Visa, check). Good for odds and ends you can't get at the local hardware store.

87yota 10-28-2005, 06:12 AM If that's the case I'll have to start shopping there again. Thanks for the info:grinpimp:
DanTheMan 12-21-2005, 05:53 PM Bingo! Got a tank! My Dad just bought an FL-50 that had 2 105 gallon auxilary tanks that he cant use (his work box wont fit).
All i need now is a pump. I was thinking of setting up the pump(s?) to pump into a "T" in the stock fuel filler hose going to the tank. Maybe get 1 or 2 general fuel pumps from Napa, they are about $25-35 bucks. Could mount a switch inside and as im driving, when my tank gets half full, flip the switch and have it transfer as im driving. What do you guys think?
Any other ideas? Thanks.

The 50 gallon stock tank sounds nice for us who want a lil extra and don't want to sacrafice any room... can you buy it seperate and is it an arm and a leg?
welndmn 12-22-2005, 10:01 AM Many places make a tool box/ gas tank combo, very nice
dobsogj 12-22-2005, 08:31 PM I have the TFI 48 gallon replaement tank in my crew cab short bed super duty. Great fit and craftsmanship, but $$. I had a tractor supply in bed tank. It was real dirty inside, i was always changing fuel filters. A buddy had the same problem. Anyone else?

I thinks its the aft-axle tank for the 99+ cab & chassis. I don't know if the frame rail length and bumper on a pickup are compatible.
Supertanks also...they make a polymer stock type replacement tank

82F100SWB 12-23-2005, 08:41 PM I've got a 120 gallon tank in the bed of my diesel, similar to the one Canuck Jeeper has that normally has a pump installed, but, I work in the oil heating buisness, and we regularly set up top feed tanks that use a 2" duplex bushing and a copper drop tube setup, so, I used the exact same setup to plumb it into my truck. Feed line into the drop tube, return into the other side of the bushing. I also have an old dual tank Ford that had a non existant rear tank, so, the in bed tank is hooked up to the fuel selector switch just like the rear tank was, so, flip the stock switch on the dash and I'm running off of the tank in the bed. Only downside is no guage. But, the $80 I have invested in that setup(brass and the tank itself) is a hell of alot cheaper than a new rear tank.
k5chevyblazer 12-27-2005, 08:23 AM I do love the 44 gallon tank in my Excursion, I have a 700 mile range is is awesome.
82F100SWB 12-27-2005, 07:45 PM Bah? 700 miles...
That's childs play... LOL
Range on my truck is about 2K miles...

SolidAxleDurango 12-28-2005, 03:03 AM I do love the 44 gallon tank in my Excursion, I have a 700 mile range is is awesome.
34 gallons on my truck gets me about 700 miles (empty) and 330-360 towing.... It would be nice to not have to search out fuel as soon as I do... But I gotta pee before 300 miles anyway!
82F100SWB 12-28-2005, 05:55 PM My 00 F250(7.3/6 speed) ran about 625-650 miles on it's 38 gallon tank, and our 05 F350 at work(6.0/torq shift) runs about 600 at best....

I'll see your 2K and raise you 1K. Ummmmm, 3K, fill every month and a half or 2 months depending. :flipoff2:
82F100SWB 12-30-2005, 07:39 PM LOl... Give me overdrive, and/or a new tank switch(so all 3 tanks work, instead of just one), and I could probably match your range... LOL Spinning 2500 to do 60 and being overfuelled withotu a turbo doesn't help the 6.9's case when it comes to mileage... Ah well
