: Homemade rock courses...
Fullreversal 03-17-2002, 07:37 PM I know a few people around here have managed to make them.... How did you go about it all? (Getting the rocks, transporting them, arrangement, etc, all assuming you dont have huge rocks in your yard already). Lets see some pics too. :)

ToyFamily 03-17-2002, 09:08 PM A lady I know wante some bolders for her landscaping so she went up to a site where they had a pile and found out they were gonna transport away so she asked if they could take em to her house and she gave them a couple bucks........now she has buolders for almost no transport cost, and no cost for the rocks.
jeepmaxx 03-17-2002, 10:08 PM If you are going to try to do this in the auburn area somewhere let me know and I will try to help and know a couple of other people that might want to help also.
Wilson 03-17-2002, 11:30 PM A bobcat is very handy for placing rocks, do it all of the time at work and I've toyed with the idea of making my own pile, just don't have the room.
If you want the big fawkers a bobcat isn't gonna cut it. I'd get the biggest tractor you can find so you can get some bigass rocks.
Wilson 03-17-2002, 11:43 PM We use our bobcat to move boulders up to 2400 lbs, that'sa bout 4'x5' of rock. Not huge, but with a stack of them it'll work. we also amde a custom sling that allows us to rotate the rocks and face them during the construction of boulder retaining wallls. So I can put them pretty much anywhere I want.
stonpny 03-17-2002, 11:46 PM in general how much would something like this cost? i know it would depend on the type of rock, so what is the cheepest, but in the same sense what is the best.
Wilson 03-17-2002, 11:52 PM We pay around $35 a ton for landscape grade boulders. We mostly use moss-covered rock that comes directly from the foothils surrounding Chico. The cheapest way to get rocks for a course would be to go by a construction site where large rocks are prominent, they usually haul them off to ??? since they get scarred up during their removal. If you have a way to transport them you could probably ge them for next to nothing. Our bobcat rate is around $65/hour or $500/day.
shaggyzukin 03-18-2002, 12:27 AM I know the owners son of a local rock quarry, and have access to heavy equipment.. I have been toying around with this same Idea, but I have no property to set up the chit :(
hmmm... Maybe a phone call to Ralph Huffman (owner of the Washougal Motocross, and offroad racing track), should be in order... It'd be cool for him...more money. Cool for my club.. free entrance and recognition..
Thanks for the thread dude... I now have a new mission in life. Now all I need to do is make my Jeep rock ready instead of for mud/dirt trails.
As for you (full reversal). My advise to you is to try and get a line on the materials... And try and get a local 4x sponser, to set it up on there property so you don't have to worry about insurance. Make sure in the deal, you get in free and maybe get something out of the whole thing, besides a new kick arse place to wheel..

erikrs301 03-18-2002, 09:36 AM Hey this is pretty cool, I've been toying with the same idea. My yard is 3.25 acres of flat open grass. I was planning on loading it with trees an leaving an open area in the back, hidden from the road and houses.
I was thinking about starting with a small base of mid-sized rock ('cause I don't have a huge rig) and building from there. There area a ton of new homes going up around me and could probably get some cruddy fill from themfor a little :smokin: .
morpheus 03-18-2002, 09:54 AM there's a guy somewhere around phoenix who has quite a setup
in his backyard from what i hear. let me see if i can find someone who's been there.

ROKTOY 03-18-2002, 10:07 AM Dave Hickman has a rock garden backyard setup here in the Phoenix area. He brought in about 200 tons (as I recall) of surface boulders and a bunch of telephone poles. He has one strip of boulders about ten feet wide and about 30 yards long with some poles thrown in towards the end. Then he has a long mound built with dirt and the remains of an old Chevy truck, buried. The mound is maybe 12 feet wide by 5-6 feet high and maybe 25 yards long. You can run it end –to-end or try jumping on it from any angle. Makes a great playground.
Interesting to see competent ARCA competitors stopped cold, hung up in Dave’s backyard.
:D :D :D

morpheus 03-18-2002, 10:20 AM Jay just told me that he thought www.alloffroad.com had a writeup on that one guy's 'yard' ... check it out. it's in the sept 01 issue.

erikrs301 03-18-2002, 12:43 PM Now that's pretty sweet. I'm thinking of making mine as long as possible in a U shape. I need to do some long term planning on my lot to figure out how I'm gonna do this. I'll bet I could get some rocky fill dumped cheap and then slowly add boulders. Wonder how the neighbors are gonna like this one. :D
Overkiller 03-18-2002, 01:04 PM My Uncle's a general contractor and ocassionally he unearths huge like VW sized boulders that they have to pay out the nose to dump. He said when I get dirt I can get all the huge rocks I want for free:smokin:. I figure when I get around to graduating colledge and making my fortune I'll get a couple of acres and a surplus duece and a half and go to town. If anyone is interested I'd suggest making some friends with the local pool builder. Tell them they can dump any rocks bigger then a V8 in your backyard for free. I bet you'd have a notable rock garden in no time. You'd probably have to supervise the operation to make sure they don't dump other stuff though and pass out  to those who are helping you out.

muddogbob 03-18-2002, 01:16 PM Great idea guys....my 2 next door neighboors both have huge boulder gardens for landscaping...they've build big walls and ledges that would be awsome to crawl on...actually ever day i look across the street i have to hold myself back...:skull:
Ten_Bucks 03-18-2002, 03:51 PM My Dad has the perfect land acreage for doing what you people are talking about. Its givin' me ideas. Too bad I don't live with my Dad, though.
