: Tow rig questions

Well, the lease is up on my parents car that I've been using as a DD, so it's time for me to buck up and get something. I figure this is as good a time as any to get the pickup that i've always wanted. It will be my DD and tow my Early Bronco. I know absolutely nothing about towing, I've never had the luxury. Anyway, i'm looking mostly at 2000-2001 F250 PSD as i'm always partial to Ford. I tried searching but I couldn't find an answer to my main question...how does lifting a truck/throwing on bigger tires affect it while towing. Lots of the used trucks i've seen have some sort of lift and bigger tires. How big can i go before i will wish i was pulling with a stock truck? Also, as a side question...i may be moving to CA soon, what do I have to make sure of so i won't have smog problems? Sorry for the boring newbie post.

Thanks,
Steve

I run a 33x11.5 tire on my stock 91 ford 250 with no clearance problems at all. Rember if it is your tow rig and daily driver keep it simple and reliable. Leave the cool stuff for your trail rig....

Yeah, I would definitely say do not lift your tow rig. It'll just screw up the towing capablilities too much and make it suck for what its supposed to do. Leave well enough alone.

wherever you store the bronco just park the bronco on the trailer and leave it in the same spot. but make sure it is VERY WELL SECURED becuase a nice bronco all ready to go on a trailer could be too temping for many...

if its a tow rig leave it stock, you will just screw it up with a lift and bigger tires.

Hmmmmmmm........So you are looking for a 2000 F250 PSD. Well I got one for sale :D Honestly a very sweet ride and will pull a house. I'll give you a smokin deal on it too cause it needs to go and it aint liffted or anything. Mainly just power modifications. I think the only difference between a Cali emmision truck and the rest of the US is the CAT on the exhaust. Ford was required to put CAT's on Cali emmision truck but they left them off all the other trucks. Now the 99's had CAT's on all the trucks. Head over to www.ford-diesel.com and ask the question over there as to how the testing is in cali.

Honestly though I will give you a smokin deal on my rig cause I need to get rid of it by the end of april and I am only 5-6 hours away from you. If you want any info just PM me.

check your PMs BIGSTIC. 9-Volt, that's probably how i'll end up keeping it. It just seems like i'm inviting someone to steal the thing.

AWESOME! I just checked and you are correct. No SMOG for diesel vehicles. Geez i thought i was lucky when i found out my 72 Bronco was exempt, now i'll have 2 exempted vehicles.

I have to chime in a play Devils advocate here...

I would not buy ANY NEW Ford until they figure out that we don't like them donating money to the greens that use that money to close down trails that we use FORD vehicles to get to....

If you have to have a Ford, buy it used, then you're not supporting Ford new contributions, but still getting a nice Vehicle...

Well Uh I don't know what to say about this. So I will keep my mouth shut. :flipoff2:

But if he picks up my truck then he gets the best of both worlds. ;)

Here is a link to my Add http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35280

And like I said I can give you a smokin deal. Probably just enough to get rid of the loan. :flipoff2:

All the auto companies are giving money to "the greens". Some just publicize it more than others. It's just smart business for them. I guarentee if you look at any american auto company i guarentee you find the same. The good news (well, good for you, bad for me) is that i don't have the cash for a new one anyway.

btw BIGSTIC i sent you another email.

I am not sure of all the smog laws- but- I believe when you first register the 72 in CA you may have to pass smog. I think the exemption year runs through 75 now, but smog is still required on change of title and initial registration.

The other day somebody listed the website for smog rules- but I can't remember if that was here or on 4x4Wire.

It may depend on what part of Cal you are moving to.
