I have a Chevy Dana 60 with a BOM # that says its a 1980 Chevy. My problem is that its got Ford locking hubs on it, and has a wimpy inner 35 spline long shaft. I did a search and now Im really confused.
The calipers are single piston, and the hubs are 6 bolt so that must all be Chevy stuff right?. Someone posted in an earlier thread that 76/77 Fords had skinny axles that necked down smaller than a 44 so now I think that I might have a Ford long shaft. ??
Here is a quick sketch of my junk. What is this from? is it a Ford shaft?

Sorry for the size, I should probably stop drinking :D
The inner has 35 splines and the outer has 30 splines. I want to run this axle for a while until I save up for a 35 spline outer and a better long inner. I need to know what I have so that I can order the right stuff.
Thanks for any help.

isnt that just a stock chev axle?

Maybe, but Im confused about the ford lockout hubs. Can you use ford hubs when everything else is stock chevy?

Sounds like A chevy 60 to me. Mine is A 30 outer and 35 inner. And what is so wimpy about 35 splines. Thats what D 70 rears run also. You need to quit looking at rockwells or something.

The 35 spline is not, in its self, wimpy. The "wimpy" comes from the necked down, 1.3" diameter in the middle of the long shaft. That is why I drew the quick sketch so that you could see what I was talking about. I should have been more clear. :D
any way, my main question was: "Can you use ford hubs when everything else is stock chevy?"
Sounds like from the posts so far that im running all chevy, but the locking hubs. So it must be ok :D
Thanks again:usa:

oem '79 shafts were of the neck down variety. 80 and later were the larger shafts. (unless of course they had some left over parts to get rid of!) afaIk no shafts are interchangeable between ford and chevy. locking hubs interchange with no problems. same hub dimensions and same 30 spline stubs. One of my chevy 60's had ford locking hubs on it too. Don't really know why, although I feel the ford oem locking hubs are stronger than any aftermarket ones you can get. They just aren't as trail friendly to work on if you need to swap a shaft. (ford's are 5 pieces vs warn's two pieces not including snap rings.)

Go to www.warn.com, go to the "hub applications" page, look up part numbers for Ford and Chebby D60 locking hubs. If they are the same, cha-ching...you have your answer!
i suspect the locking hubs are all interchangeable - I know in D44's the lockouts are the sam for about 100 different trucks!

Let's try this again. Top Chevy 60, middle chevy 44, bottom Dodge 44.

Thank you, I dont know why i didnt think of that. i guess. Now I feel stupid. :flipoff2:
Here is what I found at warn:
PN 38826 is what I need. It fits 76-87 30 spline 1 Ton Chevys, 78-97 3/4 Ton Ford Heavy Duty, 78-97 1 Ton Ford, 99 + SuperDutys, and 90-93 3/4 and 1Ton Dodges.
:smokin:
What does everyone think about upgrading to 35 spline outers? Is everyone doin' it:question:

I want to go rockwells. I like them. I was just saying he must be looking at big axles to say 35 spline shafts are wimpy. But thats not what he ment either. WOW major confusion. Do you know where I can get A set of rockwells and how much.

The axle is out of a 1982 Dodge front 44 and measures 37.31" from the end of the axle to the center of the U-joint ear.
