I just don't get it. Seemed to start leaking tranny fluid real bad after this run. I hate mud!

Sean, there is usually nothing protecting that seal as it shouldn't see dirt. "IF" the bellhousing got full of mud from an access hole from the upper side then it may not have drained well and this allowed the grit in the mud to work on the seal. When you pull the tranny look to see if a lot of mud had been in siting in there. IF mud was the reason take a good look at the Rear Main seal of the motor as the mud had access to it as well.
If it is a full circle main then look into replacing it at the same time for peace of mind. you will have already done all the labor to get at it anyway.

1- Real transmissions don't have torque converters.
2- Thats not real mud, that's California mud = Big mud puddle
:D ;)
