View Full Version : Just bought my Samuri
I just got an 87 hardtop with 85,000 miles and can't wait to dig into it. It's entirely stock now, but as soon as I get the cash, that will change. On a small budget, where shall I start? I'm thinking just the basic SPOA lift and tires, then the transfer case gearset. Is this pretty basic Zuki 101? What would minimum tire size be for Utah trails be?

what type of wheeling are you plaining on doing? I started off with a spring over and 31"s and did alot of trails at moab. For any of the steep climbs you will need the 4.1 gears or you will power out with the 31's. their are several companys that have the 4.1 welded gear sets. The set i bought from Brent at trail tough has held up, for going on 2 years now.
If you are on a tight budget I would buy the spring over kit and the 4.1 gear set . to get buy for a while I would pick up some used 31"s or 32'S. and mount them on the stock wheels.
Good Luck

i wouldn't mount them on the stock rims though.........get some stock rims off a f-150 or fullsize bronco, thats what i run and i got them for 45$ for 5.........and they have 3"b/s, 31"s don't rub....................
o yeah............:flipoff2: WELCOME NEWBIE:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I've got an 87 Suburban that I'm building up for family wheeling. I thought I'ld build the Samuri for a little guilt free craziness and not worry about it's body damage too much. We've got lots of variety as far as wheeling goes around here, and I want ot try them all. As trail rig building is an ongoing process, thanks for the vote of confidance on where to start. Oh, and thanks for the tip on the f-150 wheels. There's lot's of those rotting around.

:flipoff2: welcome fellow Utah newbie:flipoff2: congrats on the purchase :D
A quick heads up on the F150 wheel thing....... the -stock- F150 wheels will not fit over the centers of a Suzi...
Stock Jeep and Scout wheels will however..
The ford uses a smaller crimped down center hole...Just FYI.
on a Side note........... Hey Brent (BB88) when do we see updated pic's of the Sidekick???:D
