Severely Dislocated Thumb
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I did it this time.
I was out camping and dirt-biking this past weekend in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts, near the town of Pittsfield. Had a pretty good wreck on some New England rocks & roots. Aside from a colorfully bruised shoulder and some sore ribs, I dislocated my left thumb pretty severely. The basal joint end of the metacarpal bone in my left thumb was quite obviously not where it belonged; I had to manipulate it back into position and then tightly wrap the hand with duct tape -- as it was repeatedly popping back out of place.
I rode about 40 additional trail miles back to my pickup, then drove to the nearest Emergency Room. The folks at the ER in Massachusetts said no bones were broken, but the joint remained unstable.
I followed up with an orthopedist first thing this morning (Monday) and he put me in a permanent cast (rather than the fiberglass splint + elastic bandage I'd been using since Saturday). The hand was in essentially a "handshaking" position. That failed to stabilize the joint properly, however. It kept popping in and out all day, even inside the cast, from the slightest muscle movement.
Went back this afternoon & did a second cast -- this time in an exaggerated "hitchhiking" position. It seems to be better. Arm is also now in a sling, so as to keep me from trying to use that hand -- even a little. Follow up will be in three days. Doc says odds are 3:1 that it will NOT heal properly, and that surgery will be required to reconstruct the ligament that stabilizes that joint -- using a borrowed piece of tendon from elsewhere in the arm. "Half of a tendon that you don't even use", according to the Doc.
Guess I'm done riding for a while.
And my typing for the next several weeks will be entirely one-handed.
I think I'm going to need to ride shotgun in the Pinelands in a few weeks. I hope I'll be able to properly hold a camera by then.

Ummm...define "colorful" for the rest of the class.
Better yet...to further extrapulate upon your metaphor...The BB represents the world in Black and White. Stock and semi-stock representation that does not need any colorizations.
Pirate is the environment for which one gravitates to when he starts to see a certain hue other than contrasting Black and White...
Either stay and be a part of the class...or expell yourself and lurk...

What I mean is that it seems that many on the Pirate board feel the need to curse in order to get their point across, which is just fuckin fine with me. I'll still go to Binder Bulletin and I'll still come here. From what you're saying if I wanted to put a Chevy in my Scout the BB would shun me but Pirate would help me figure out how to do it. Is that about right?

close... The POR board is just another flavor, more of the harder-core. Often times BB addicts come here and expect us to be as helpful on mild questions as the users of the BB are. When they get blown off, the get pissed and we end up having threads like this one.
This happens all over the place. For example. At the second RMIHR I attended (first time as D&C) my partner Chris decided to check out the dog-track racing. After trying to approach the "head honchos" at the 'dog bone' track. He was blown off by the "greats" of that arena. I went down and talked to them next and was likewise blown off. Perhaps it was because we were asking stupid newbie-style questions like "what locker is best for this racing" or something like that. My partner was so pissed off about the precieved arogance that he was dead-set on building a racer, just to show them up.
Similarly when BB users come to the POR board asking BB type questions, the users here usually blow them off. Some BB users feel that its not a matter of what question, but how its asked. This usually leads them to think they need to add swear words ~ or a little attitude ~ to the question. More often times than not, this ticks off the POR guys and the flame-war begins.
There have been plenty of BB questions asked and answered here on the POR board without flaming. Most of the time, if the question is too BB'ish, someone points them towards the BB. Its just realizing what questions are appropriate and which are not.
For the record, I haven't cursed once on this board (to my immediate knowledge) ~ never have, never will ~ and I only get flamed once in a while ;)

Excellent explanation. It is now crystal clear. So I should not ask which shift rail is which because I should have labeled them when I took it apart and since I didn't label it (newbie mistake) and don't know which goes where (cause this is the first time I've done this), it would be a question better answered on the BB.

PS If anyone here would like to tell me which one is which I would greatly appreciate it.

Basically leave the BB there and please don't bring BB questions here.

Put them next to each other side by side. Turn the rods to make the detents correspond. By doing this you should be able to tell which is the left and right. Also look at where the set screws would go in as this is another way to tell.

If someone swears on our public bulletin board, we aren't going to tattle to their mommy, but we don't encourage people to cuss like a sailor. Sometimes we will come across a person or even a prospective advertiser who will say they won't go to our website because it's so offensive. Well that is just silly. We like to think of our website as the real world, where things aren't sugar coated, and people talk the way they talk when they're hanging out around a camp fire.
