My buddy has an 89 amigo and wants to keep the IFS for going fast and snow, he allready has a jeep on 60s so he wont ever want this to be too extreme, any way my question is how will the front CVs hold up with 33s locked up in moderate wheelin?
and also are there any upgrades, has any one tried to get them treated like the old longfields?
thanks

they are plenty strong for 33's, locked up, I had an ARB in mine, no probs. I know of few folks that are running 35's, but that is when you start breaking them. it all depends on driving styles as well, if you are go pedal crazy, even dana 60 is to small to some.

there was a big to-do about getting the cv's treated by the smurfield dude, but nothing came of it (everyone seriously interested seemed to go ahead and SAS their junk) but i'm sure if you contacted him, if he still does his thing, he'd listen to an offer.
easiest thing would be to carry spares :D

One thing he can do to make the CV's last longer after lifting is add a set of these:
http://www.darlington-offroad.com/item.jhtml?UCIDs=534357%7C1322069&PRID=1467962
The steep angles the CV's experience after lifting makes them more prone to breakage... the item linked above helps reduce these angles.

what do you guys think of the calmini lift, mainly a-arms and torsion bars? what else is out there in the way of front lifts, i couldnt find much

Relocating the front diff is definately a good idea if you want to make your cv's last. I am running 35's, locked and geared. I broke an inner joint last time out (ok, ok, it was over a year ago). But it broke because I backed up somewhere I should not have. Totally my fault. I also broke the shaft between the joints years ago with a lockrite and 31's. But, I think that was just a freak thing.
If you are really serious, a set of birf rings will put you far ahead. I machined a set of rings that go around the outer birf joint. The rings are about a 1/4" thick and are a tight press fit. The boot stretches enough to cover them and they clear the bolts for the ball joint and the lower arm. Frankly, I would say this is why I did not break an outer.
Good Luck,
Michael

Check out Independent4x.com and Darlington-offroad.com.
The Calmini arms are nice, but the same thing can be accomplished with a ball joint flip and spacer. The HD torsion bars are nice if you're adding weight up front, but not necessary for a solid lift.

i saw the ball joint spacer but what do you mean flip? i plan on a small winch and bumpers, should i get the torsion bars, and thanks for the infoi and sorry for the weak q's, dont know much about isuzu susp. or ifs in general, always got rid of it. also looking for uused parts especially a front locker, also how much did you pay for the tera low gears or should i try to adapt a toyota tranny and tcase set up instead? dont know anything about it but i saw an amigo with a v6 that had toyota stuff in it. also if i get the spacers and crank my torsion bars wont it just ride like shit

cranking your bars is the only way to achieve lift. if that in turn means a shitty ride then so be-it because you'll just have to live with it like that.
and as far as the flip... here is a link:
http://www.planetisuzoo.com/articles.htm/78
the flip is basically positioning the upper ball joint to the bottom of the upper A-arm in order to achieve better alignment geometry after the torsion bars have been cranked.

I'm not trying to steal the thread, but I just wanted to confirm some info that some of you guys have stated.
So if I crank my t-bars, flip and space my balljoints and run 33"s, I should be ok for mild to mid wheeling? And I shouldn't really be killing my cv's.
As you can tell I am new to the isuzu world. I just picked up a 88 trooper w/ the 2.6, and 5pd and I can't wait to get wheeling...
I have been wheeling w/ my friend who has a '77 Fj40, and we have a blast!
Thanks for the info..

you shouldn't even have to lift it much at all to fit the tires. a little fender trimming and beating the firewall in a little bit will fit whatever you want to run. but a little extra ground clearance never hurt anyone.
just remember how everything works together. more ground clearance by cranking up those t-bars affects the life of your cv's and boots. find a compromise in between, carry spares, and beat the snot out of it.

If its an Auto, then its a Toyota 30-80le/A340H, Jeep AW4 transmission.
If you want to put on a toy case, you will need to get a Toyota Trans, as they have a differnt output. For D300 and NP241s and like grab an AW4 from a Jeep.

:D I wasn't tellin you that to show off.. I was tellin you cuz you were askin how strong the CV's are... well mine stood up VERY well to the rocks. I am starting to have problems with them after about 2k miles since the 'Con, but that could be a mix of all the noises and rattles that have developed since... *dunno*

Haha yeah, it went from perfect to so messed up I couldn't open my doors  :cool2:
I think my half shafts are about done though. I took it out to Hollister and it's makin every noise cept the metal on metal. So, it creaks and pops and the boots have been torn since I got it (before the 'Con run in Sept), and I took it thru a mud pit which filled the boots with crap. I'm takin it on a road trip I'll let you know how they fare up... so far this thing is unbreakable :flipoff2:
