: CJ5 springs - backwards?

Any idea if there is a direction for CJ5 (76) rear springs? Stupid question I know but it's my friends jeep and I can't look at it right now. we swapped a complete T18/D20 setup with driveshafts from a 79 into it yesterday, and everything fit, but the back shaft was 1" too short. Makes me wonder if the springs are directional and they are offset one way or the other.

Thanks

Measure the distance from the bushing to the ceneter pin. If it is the same then it shouldn't matter, but I do think that there is a right direction. It may not matter but if you look at the ends of the leaf spring one will be bigger than the other one. I think that the big end goes forward. This was the case on my cj-7.

they are offset , but not by very much. Think it's like an 1/8" or something.

Thanks. If it's only an 1/8 - that would only be 1/4" total then, so that wouldn't be it. Probabally some other goofy difference, he's going to get an extra shaft he has shortened to fit.

CJ springs have a centered center pin.

I just measured mine a few days ago when I went soa, and they weren't balls on dead center

Not all of them, 2a's are not centered that's why I was wondering about the 5.

Well, in the wheeling world they are considered centered. Geez....

Did the '79 have the same engine as the '76?
Is the front shaft a little long?
Just thought a different engine might put the tranny/ t-case in a different place.

Pretty sure the answer is yes. The 76 has a 304 in it, the donor 79 had a 360. The crossmember fit in a stock set of holes on the 76. The 76 does have a 1.5" lift, but even with that the shaft should have fit. No problem anyway, since we have to mess with it, we're going to rotate the perches and put in a CV shaft that he's having shortened.
