View Full Version : YJ on 37's?

I've been reading through old postings, and still can't get a good idea of what to do. I designed my money pit project to take 35'' mtr's, but now I'm thinking I might be able to shove 37's under it. I have a YJ with a 350, NV4500, Atlas 2, Dynatrac (overpriced) 60's. So no problem pushing the tires. I have about 1'' shackle lift, 1.5 Leaf spring lift, and SOA and expected some trimming. So I'm looking at 6-7"of lift. Will 37"x12.5's fit under that and how much trimming should be expected to allow full articulation? Also, should I stick with TJ width (63-3/4") axles or should I make them wider since I am having them made to my specs?

I'd have the axles made wider, you'll be more stable.
As for how much trimming for 37s, I'd imagine a lot.

Go full width, I think eventually you'd regret it, and the added stability will be welcomed

My brother had a small body lift (I think .5 or 1 inch) with 1.5" RE Soa springs and ran 38, and 40s with trimming.

I ran for a long time with full width axles, 37s, SOA w/ stock springs and a small body lift. A little rubbing, but that could have been handled with a sawzall.

Might want to look into a small wheelbase stretch... 5 inches or so wouldn't hurt

Hey - if it's not too much trouble - can you post up some pics when it's done?

Here is my YJ SOA project on 37" Boggers. My axles are 2" wider than stock. I found the full width axles on the east coast have a hard time negotiating tight trails/cones, so I compromised and went a little wider since I was also going higher.
Went with a longer wheelbase too... I SOA'd XJ length springs in the rear and went with RE 1.5" SOA springs in the front coupled with a SR in the front. Ran a 1" bl to help clear the nv4500, too. Definitely had to cut out the body to make the 37's fit with the extended wheelbase:
Here is before the cut:

Here are the 37's w/ body trimming:

The axle width question really depends on whether or not you plan on competing and/or what kind of wheeling you do and where. On the east coast, we have tight weaving trails, so somewhat narrower is better, but if you have wide open rock to climb out west then you can get away with the wider axles and definitely benefit from the extra stability.

Friend of mine runs a YJ SOA, streched to 108" with 42's on stock YJ springs with an extra leaf. Fits great and works even better, it was setup for 38.5's he found some nice 42's for cheap and they fit. Good luck, he is about stock width if not a little wider, no issues.

I have a YJ on 2.5" BDS SOA. 37" tires fit fine. I would say go a few inches wider than stock (3-4") min

My YJ has D44/D60, no BL, mix-a-leaf pack that is about a 1.5" lift. With that setup I will stuff the 37 MTR's into the front fender hard, currently running trimmed factory fendors with TJ flares... Trying out the RE SOA springs that are now installed in the front this weekend. Rear fits into the TJ flares nicely.
I went full width but brought width back in a using H2 rims and it is great.
Outside of side wall to outside of side wall is 79" on the front and 76" on the rear.
If you built it for 35's and you are now looking at 37's, don't go TJ width, go full width. Definately feels better off camber than stock width.
This is 108" WB on 38's. I have the same amount of lift as you and I was running 40's with no problems. I have a 1" BL with no lift shackles and the RE 1.5" SOA springs on the 1 ton axles that are still full width. You don't wanna run 35 on d60's that is for sure... Atleast go 37's...

Of course I have done some minor trimming :D

Bet ya will, at least to TJ flare size. Mines a work in progress so excuse the parking lot pics. Wheelbase pushed an inch each way, 2" alcans, 2" body, maybe 3/8" from the shackles, 37's (measure 36 3/8"), on full widths. Flexed with the front wheels turned you might get a playing card between the tire and rear of the front fender. Nothing left to trim on the front fenders, they are cut as far back as possible and flares mounted as high as possible, only thing left to get more room is to loose em and fab something up that is higher into the hood and further back towards the tub. Maybe a rockcrawler type hood if you dont have to run flares on the road where your at.
Still got a bit more travel to go.

Plenty of room in the rear, its the front thats the problem.

I wanna see pics of this, guessing he has no fenders or hood for that matter. I ran stock YJ springs with an extra leaf in my last heep and 35's were slayin the top of the fenders.

Agreed... My stock YJ springs SOA and 35's rubs the underside of my tube fenders, which have more clearance than stock fenders, at full stuff.

This forum kicks ass. I think I'll go with 37's and full width. I owe you all pictures when it is done... hopefully it isn't upside down before I get a cage in it.

With a little triming and BDL(1") and bump stops....... You can fit 37's SUA(4"+)......
I have 35's now but plan to move up...

I came back to this thread to mention one thing but upnover beat me to it....
BUMPSTOPS!
I don't know why these are so often over looked, even if tire clearance isnt an issue these are an important part of any suspension

36 biased iroks (measure about 37) on a 2.5" lift SUA with 1" lift shackles. No BL. Lots of trimming.
