Any know if they are gonna make the newer bikes green sticker capable.

DRZ 400e would be a nice dual sport bike but here in CA ya can't do it because the bike is a red sticker bike.

I was hoping that some day in the future Suzuki would get this bike CA green stickerable.

If you get a red sticker go to the dealer or talk to dmv that would be like buying a ktm and getting a red sticker. both are legal and should get a green sticker that is one of the biggest selling points of a drz

I was at the dealership last year and was told that they were red sticker bikes.
Some people had been given green stickers but were gonna get screwed later when the DMV caught up with them.

Maybe this all changed with this years bikes.

Just got off the phone withthe dealer.

The DRZ-400 and 400e are red sticker bikes.

The DRZ-400s is a street legal bike that is platable as well as green stickerable.

Thereare however loopholes to get the 400 and 400e greenstickered and plated.

green sticker loophole is the non resident OHV registration.

after 98 anything 90cc or above are subject to pass the epa test. This is four or two stroke . Ktm made the 520 a green sticker bike in 2002. I hope other brands follow.I like the new bikes but I'll ride my green sticker 97 cr 500 till the right bike has a green sticker. The 520 mike be the right bike but parts are still to hard to get. If you found the right dealer to sign dmv off for you I bet you could dualsport the Drz I've seen it done. In 2002 the drz got the same susp . setup for the streetlegal and dirt version. Just Bring it home put a plastic tank remove the bs .

I'm thinking I might just go with the proven XR-400.
green sticker no hassle dual sportability. replacement parts are readily available, lots of aftermarket stuff for it.

All my friends have them they have beaten the crap out of them and they continue to go.
I just wish they made an XR 400 that was just like the XR650R but smaller. Now that would be sweet.

XR 400 with an aluminum frame water cooled I'm drooling.

Numbnuts, you will never get a bike, ever.

A few months ago I bought a 97 RM 250 only because I heard enough people mention that 98 rule, listen up, thats not true! I went to three different DMV's before I finally got a green sticker. There may be some rules out there, but even the 3 DMV's and the 2 CHP stations I talked with all told me that the DMV prety much does what they want! Thats why when the first two DMV's tried to issue me a red sticker I ran like hell. I eneded up getting advice from a certain CHP officer to go to a certain DMV office in which he said they would give me a green sticker only because they did'nt have red stickers to issue out!

Beleive what you wanna hear, but I only know what I learned in my ordeal trying to get my bike registered. Most of you probably already know this, but if you were to call a DMV office ask them a question, then call another you'd probably get a different answer. Try and remember that and you'll not be surprised in the future.

It looks like the small bikes got it after 2000 I just got this info from dmv homepage:

The Board approved the off-highway recreational vehicles regulations in 1994. This rulemaking established emission standards and test procedures for off-highway vehicles (OHVs) including: off-road motorcycles (dirt bikes) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs); engines used in specialty vehicles and go-karts; and golf carts. Subsequent Board activity modified this original rulemaking. Engines producing less than 25 horsepower that are used in specialty vehicles or go-karts are now incorporated into the small off-road engine regulations. Similarly, engines producing 25 horsepower and greater that are used in specialty vehicles or go-karts are now incorporated into the large spark-ignition engine regulations.

Subsequently, in 1998, the Board approved amendments to the off-highway recreational vehicle regulations. These amendments were directed specifically toward dirt bikes and ATVs. Most notable, OHV registration is based on compliance to California's exhaust emission standards. Emission-compliant dirt bikes and ATVs are eligible for OHV Green Sticker registration and can be operated year round. Non-emission-compliant dirt bikes and ATVs are eligible for OHV Red Sticker registration and are subject to usage restrictions.

The off-highway recreational vehicle regulations now contain the following requirements:

Golf Carts - Effective January 1, 1997:
New golf cars purchased for operation within federal ozone non-attainment areas must be zero-emission golf cars (e.g. electric). To determine attainment/non-attainment areas, please click here. Golf carts in attainments areas must use engines in compliance with the small off-road engine regulations.

Dirt Bikes/ATVs (engines greater than 90cc):
New dirt bikes and ATVs that meet California's emission standards are eligible for OHV Green Sticker registration. Non-complying dirt bikes and ATVs are eligible for OHV Red Sticker registration. The regulations generally apply to 1998 and later model year dirt bikes and ATVs.

Dirt Bikes/ATVs (engines 90cc and less):
New dirt bikes and ATVs that meet California's emission standards are eligible for OHV Green Sticker registration. Non-complying dirt bikes and ATVs are eligible for OHV Red Sticker registration. The regulations generally apply to 2000 and later model year dirt bikes and ATVs.
